Damsel Haters Thread
For all of us who have been told by our LFS guy/gal (See knuckle draggin', mouth breathin' oxygen thief !!!) to use any species/type/variant/hybrid or genetic mutant of a DAMSEL to cycle a newly established tank:

THIS THREAD IS FOR YOU ! ! !

Why I hate the Blue DAMsel....

1. The Blue DAMsel is in essence the icthyological equivalent of SATAN.

2. The Blue DAMsel will harasss/intimidate/pester/molest/ annoy/steal food from/torment and cause ich and other stress related sicknesses in other more timid, placid fish species.

3. The Blue DAMsel is nearly impossible to remove from a 135 gallon reef system without the use of homemade depth charges constructed from the internal workings of an M80 which is placed into a black, plastic 35mm film cannister and dropped from the deck of SCUBA STEVE's Ocean Explorer 3. (The construction diagrams of the afore mentioned depth charges were pulled from the pages of the Anarchist Cookbook. Available at fine military surplus stores nationwide.)

4. The Blue DAMsel will cause your otherwise sane and well balanced individual (See photo of me!) to contemplate the complete removal of themselves from the saltwater hobby altogether and the use afterwards of the afore mentioned 135 to grow new species of FUNGI !

5. The Blue DAMsel causes the afore mentioned well balanced individual to proceed through the five stages of grief. Other stages that are also possible during this process and not appearing in any particular order, are: Homicidal ideation of the Finding Nemo Plush Toys on your childs' bed, Obtaining a Fishing and Hunting License so that you can shoot bass with a deer slug and the random act of smashing aquariums at your local Pets Mart or PetCo (which isn't a bad idea anyway, but still !)

Also, it should be noted that the Green Chromis has in no way, shape or form any relationship to the EVIL HELL SPAWN known as the Blue DAMsel.

Dude! You gotta trap that fish before he sends you over the edge! I just came back from visiting my Dad who complained for months about his overgrown bully 5 inch Domino damsel, the first inhabitant of his 60g reef 3 years ago. His LFS promised it would die, but instead it grew larger and meaner. My Dad is older and lives on a rural area and gave up when told by his tank maintenance man that there was no way to get it out except to tear down his reef. I brought a borrowed trap similar to this one http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=UL1513 when we travelled to visit and had him out in 30 minutes. The trapworks best against the meanest and most greedy. They just can't let the food in the back go to somebody else. It'll work. Good luck.

Hmmm...I have a Blue Damsil in my 75 reef, he is very well mannered...
What is your Damsil doing? Why do you hate him so? Have the two of you tried counseling? With a little help, you might be able to make this work;)

Seriously, if it is aggression that is making you so upset...its not the fishes fault, they are aggressive fish..Why did YOU put him in the tank knowing he would be aggressive to fish added later? Oh, you didn't know? READ AND RESEARCH BEFORE BUYING!!
This fish will not bother Tangs, Triggers and other large fish. It will not bother a Dottyback, Hawkfish, some of the more bold Wrasse, you could add some of the more aggressive Clowns such as the Tomato or Maroon..There are plenty of fish you can add..He may always bug them a little at first but the fish listed will not be intimidated.. You just need to calm down!!;)

I have my Damsel in with 2 Ocellaris Clowns, a Flame Angel and an Arc eye Hawkfish..He was in the tank before the Angel and Hawkfish and didn't bother them one bit..in fact the Hawkfish goes after the Damsel!! So that might be a good way to calm down your Damsel...buy him a Hawkfish! [just make sure to add the Hawkfish near last...they are quite aggressive]

Remember...always add more peaceful fish first, more aggressive fish last:D

First of all, I was told by the LFS weenie to use the Blue DAMsel... "They are great for cycling a tank and look pretty too !" No mention of the fact that their insane.

Secondly; I already took out an OP for the other fish in my tank but he continues to violate it.

Third; my anger is not the issue. I have plenty of range time to deal with anger issues. I train in ground fighting, work the heavy bag, swim laps, knock down the doors of crack houses, blow stuff up....plenty of outlets for my anger. The FRUSTRATION generated by this little demon is an entirely different issue. THAT is enough to drive anyway over the edge. I mean be honest, if ya try forty three different ways to trap the little sucker and none of them work.....even St. Peter would start grinding his teeth.

Awwwww come on now Kim......in my district I am known as Officer Friendly.

I am polite as they come. (Ma'am....you're under arrest !)

I am sincere. (Yes sir, you really do have 3 Felony warrants!)

I am forgiving. (Well Ma'am I personally don't care if you drive without a seatbelt but then I'm not the State of Illinois either...I only work for them )

I am understanding. (I know she makes you crazy...but you still can't smack her around...Sir, please put your hands behind your back !)

I am light hearted. (Yes sir this Aggravated Felony DUI will be very expensive but it's not all bad news....I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO )

I take time to explain myself to people. (as heard through the PA system of my squadcar......DRIVER EXIT THE VEHICLE WITH YOUR HANDS OUT AWAY FROM YOUR BODY.....DRIVER KNEEL ON THE GROUND...DRIVER LAY FACE DOWN ON THE GROUND....!)

I provide information to the citizens. (Come out now or I am going to send in my dog.)

I educate people to make their lives easier. ( Yes ma'am, that scorching burning sensation is the active habanero pepper ingredient in the Pepper Spray. That feeling should disappear fully in about 4-6 hours.)

See...Officer Friendly ! ! ! Drive Safely !

get the smallest hook and thinnest monofilament and go fishing.
Bait... what evet the DAMsel likes.

I have used one like this on my blue devil several times
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=14700

This has also been helpful with other fish, moving fish from QT to display, etc.

It is very quick to go in after food, and after a couple free meals, she gets very comfortable with it.

Mine hasn't caused any problems though - fellow tankmates are a tomato clown, a yellow tang, a diamond watchman goby, and a 3-stripe damsel. The blue devil is the bottom of the totem pole.

It has had eggs a couple times too, despite not having another blue devil around. Anybody else find that strange?

Now the domino damsel in my other tank - that fish isn't Satan's spawn; it IS Satan. He's the only fish in the tank, though, so he's tolerable.

i had a pair that use to spawn frequently. They beat the crap out of everything (including my hands whenever i went into the tank) The female would removed chunks of skin from my hand!!!
I upgraded and gave them to my friend who has 2 8" porc puffers. The damsel PICKED ON THEM!!!! bit little holes in the tail.. i think the aggression was due to the breeding...

they are the devil though.. just a brightly colored blue one :)

See BUTTERFLY GIRL....there are others that agree with me... when closely examined under a high power electron microscope, the scales of these DAMsels are all shaped like 6's ! ! !

Just admit it; THEY ARE E V I L ! ! !

my blue picked on any other damsel I put in the tank -- beat up a fiji devil so I put him in another tank for an eventual rematch. Beat up a beau gregory. Until I put in a hawaiian snowflake then the blue wasnt going to mess w/ him-- then my tank got ick and everything died except the blue so now she's back on top of the food chain except the fiji grew up and healed so now I put him in and they are an even match

one owns 24inches of territory each and when it sfeeding time they meet in the middle--you should see them battle

i had my last dealings with damsels about a year ago..dang lemon ****ers.. oh ya, supposedly less aggressive than others.
these freakin things did nothing but harass the crap out of each other in a 125.. left one in and it just wouldn't leave the other smaller fish alone.. tore tank down to get the ****er out..

Maybe if you were nice to your fish, they'd be nice too:D Its all in the way you raise them;)

Question is....why did you buy the aggressive fish in the first place? Did you think you could change him? Did you think he'd be intimidated by your 'officer Friendly' act? Did you think you could keep him in line with your gun and your Pepper spray? Oh PLEASE! Leave the poor fish be:D

Okay...now I can never drive through Illinois again

I actually like the fiesty character and colors and shape -just wish you could keep more together without having to figure out the proper rockwork, husbandry, etc -- too much trouble

my favorite fish are wrasse, damsels, pseudochromis

by the way my neon dotty wont take any lip from the blue either -theyll square off once in a while w/ flared finnage
