Certain fish can tolerate certain amounts of Nitrite and Ammonia. It is best to assume that nothing can withstand any measurable Ammonia or Nitrites. I wouldn't add anything to your aquarium if you are reading any Ammonia or Nitrites.
 
There isn't any evidence for nitrite toxicity in fish, not in the levels we'll see in reef aquaria, anyway. I would worry about ammonia, but not nitrite. The reef chemistry articles have details on this issue.
 
I had nitrates at 40ppm in a QT. The drugs killed off the bacteria and he's flying around it today. Actually he's kinda just poking around

But the nitrates where 40ppm 2 weeks ago.
