Dave's worlds slowest pico build

Nice them ati bulbs are great. My next tank i want to run t5's again. With my current tank now with its dimensions there are now t5 fixtures that would work.

Hey Dave, how are you finding the ati unit? I'm setting up a shallow reef and I'm looking at lighting options, Do you think that 4 T5's would be enough to grow SPS in a 12" tall tank?

It's actually an old DIY unit I tore apart and retrofitted under my canopy, just has ATI bulbs. I would say 4 bulbs could do SPS on a reef that shallow but 6 would be better. I also love the LED supplementation. The extra color pop and shimmer is nice.

OK, I can get a 8 bulb unit for a bit more than a 4 bulb one, do you think that if I raise it up enough it would work on the tank?

An 8 bulb would be awesome. I could actually wire mine to an 8 bulb if I wanted but I have no need to. Not a whole lot of SPS in my tank.

I could keep anything I want which is what I'm looking forward to. I hope to get a maxi clam or three as well as SPS.

Sounds like your tank is going to drink calcium

I have a clam in mine, some montis, setosa, a couple across but nothing crazy.

Yup I think I'm going to have too heavily dose calcium if I go the high powered way:p. I'm still torn between going SPS dominant or a mixed reef with a good variety of softies, LPS and a few SPS corals on the very top of the reef. I think that if I go the mixed route, I could use a 4 bulb HO unit with a led stunner stip on each side of the T5's so I get some of that nice shimmer and pop from the leds and it would work well. If i go the SPS dominant route I'd get the 8 bulb. I am leaning towards the mixed option as I really like the variety of the different corals. What do you think Dave?

Depends on what you like. I prefer a bit of a mix. If you're a die hard SPS lover go heavy SPS. I'm a bit of a zoa freak myself. I love LPS as well. As far as SPS I'm not huge on it. Some are super nice some just don't do it for me. I love birdsnest and some montis and some acros are super nice. I love color and movement though.
