Davids Denitrator

Hello All,

Just have to spend a minute to share my experiences with Davids Denitrator.

Since I have setup my aquarium maybe two years ago I have constantly been battling nitrate issues. No matter what I did I could not keep my Nitrates low. Constant water changes, hardly feeding nothing could keep it down. I could never keep any hard corals and my colors always sucked.

Even after hearing from several members that Davids reactor will solve the problem I was reluctant to purchase it. Well maybe a month ago I contacted him. And within a few days we met up. David set me up with a precycled unit and within minutes of getting it home I had it set up.

David kept in constant contact with me about the progress of the reactor. My first few tests with two different reactors were still bright red. It was so high the tests could not read it. Even a fellow reefer with excellent equipment could not run the test. A few days later I noticed a slight difference between intake and output. Maybe two weeks later and my tank nitrates were half of what they were. Now I run the test and I cant detect any nitrates.

One of the best pieces of equipment I own. I never fuss with it and it does its job. Thanks David.

I'm in a similar situation - very high nitrates. We just did a 50% water change which helped a lot - but I'd like to invest in a long term solution.
I have been looking at a Zeovit reactor - but would like to learn more about this system.
Do you have any contact info for David? A Google search linked back to this thread.

David has his own forum on the orca website, you can contact him that way, or I believe his RC name is Davy182.

How much does a piece of equipment like that set you back, and did you get the sulphur version or the carbon based one?

x3 I got one of david's first units and it has worked like a charm since...
2 thumbs up...very low maintenance...

Hey Guys!

Sorry didnt snapped any pics, but as far as I know I did get the sulphur one. When I return back from Colorado I'll snap some pics. Hit up Davy182 for details and pricing. Hey Swirlygig, your one of the reasons I bought it. And ultra low maintenance, havent had to do anything with it and as far as I know all you need to do is rinse it every few months.

I would love to see some pics. I have been trying vodka with not much success. I might have to try and make it to a meeting this year.

I'm still trying to decide between a sulfur or zeovit based system. I'm going buggy trying to determine which is best for our goals :worried:

If you are dosing vodka, have you checked into adding sugar and vinegar and dosing VSV? There is a bunch of info on VSV out there...so much it makes me wish I was able to stay awake in organic chemistry.....

I have made my own De-Nitrator using a TLF reactor, some tubing, a powerhead and some fittings from Lowes. Its cheap and very effective. Nothing to it. There are some threads on here a while back on how to do it.

I heard some guys have trouble with sugar. I have really slacked the last year but want to get some corals thriving this year. I am tired of having a f/o with some softies and want to step it up. I know Marc has had great success with Vodka.

Here is the link to the diy sulfur reactor. A lot of people have had great luck. It is another piece of equipment to keep an eye on though. It looks like the benefits really out weight the negatives.

Time is always an issue with me., Money is too. But I am interested in Davids reactor if it is a fair price. Does he have a website with his product listed? Anyone have any pictures? I have about a 600 gallon system with plenty of fish and i want to put more fish and corals so I need a decent size. i need to dig a little deeper in orca to see if I can find more info.

Here is a sticky about chemistry. I continue to go back to it since I cant always remember. A good read.
