Herman - thanks. This is the first extended blackout we've had in 5+ years. Most of the blackouts are only for 1 or 2 hours. I don't know if I can persuade the wife to let me get a portable generator.

Steve - I didn't even think about bags of hot water. As long as my fish makes it, I'd be happy. I am going to start my 120G back up this month.

sorry to hear about your tank, minh. i definitely wasn't prepared for this either. i was most worried about my fish as well, specifically my black occ. pair because they have been with me the longest. i have far more money in all the corals, but something about those little guys just gets me. i would feel horrible if they didn't make it. good luck with yours.

I feel your pain.

As I write im in Las Vegas over 500 miles away from my home in Chico. I had setup an auto top off for evaporation but couldn't have ever guessed the power would be out as long as it was. Over 24 hours our power was out and we are on the same grid as the Hospital (usually the first to regain power.) I was at the whim of my parents who were gracious enough to go over and hang out for a while warming water with a gas stove and using a gas heater to sustain the temps above 70... they were even going in every 20 minutes to turkey baste the water and agitate it.

I'm in the airport waiting for my flight and only hoping everything is okay... I guess the fish and shrimp are okay but my parents wouldn't know what to look for with the corals so I can only hope they aren't dead and killing my tank as I write....

Sorry to hear that you were away during all of this. I imagine you must feel a certain anxiety not being here to do something. That said, I am happy to hear that h20sidhe was able to help out. Very Nice h20sidhe!

I was out of power for 27 hours and was pretty much up all night trading deep cycle marine batteries on a power inverter I purchased just the day before this last storm hit.

iairj84, hope your parents good deeds pay off for you, and everything turns out ok!

my babies!!! oh i am so happy they are doing alright. sherie, you are awesome. as for the corals, i expect some loss, but hopefully at least a few of them make it.

mike, glad to hear you had purchased those batteries in time!

I got home and everything is all good from what I can tell with the lights off. fish are all snuggled up with their hosted frogspawn so that was good... Hopefully everything else is all good. We'll see tomorrow!

Hey, just a thought....as a club, are you guys able to buy things for these type of situations? How about a small portable generator for instances like this? I think you can get cheap-o ones suitable for running a few hundred watts for around $200. Then your $25 yearly fee would just be like a backup insurance plan.

Good idea, but I think it would be tough to decided who gets it, when 3-4 tanks are down at the same time, like this last storm

After waiting 10 hours with just a powerhead on an UPC, I bit the bullet and bought a generator. If you have a lot of money in livestock then its a good investment. Got a 3500 watt Champion brand generator with a 4 gallon gas tank (easily ran all night on one tank of gas) from Kragen's for only $299. All their generators were/are on sale right now. Its a little loud, but in an emergency people understand.
