I am planning a 240 gallon cube 48x48x24 with the overflow dead in the center .. the overflow box will be 12x12 and will have 2 - 1 1/2" bulkhead drains and 2- 1" bulkhead returns... does this sound good ?

please share pictures of your center of the tank overflow and also if you like the way it works and looks or if you hate it and why?

thanks! Dean

A center overflow could look real nice on a walk-around tank (not so much on one that is up against a wall). Personally, I'd set it up for a gyre flow, either using a closed loop, or pumps affixed to the overflow. Also, you probably won't need such a large overflow since being 4-sided, your current plan has almost 48 linear inches of overflow. An 8x8 overflow should be more than sufficient.

thanks for the input benjc... so an 8x8 would be sufficient ?

I would really like to hear from some reefers with center overflows. thanks all.

I have a glass holes overflow centered with 2 2in bulkheads and 2 1in return lines at the end of the tank. It works great for me, I wouldn't change anything.

My 480G display has the overflow dead center. It's setup as a peninsula. The dimensions are 48" x 96" by 24" tall. I had this tank built over 20 years ago.

Here are some pictures taken in the last few weeks.

thanks too all! awesome tanks and thanks for the confidence in keeping with my center of the tank overflow dreams! Dean

When I built my tank, it was not planned as a peninsula but instead it was backed up against a well with the front and part of each side viewable. When I moved it to my new home in '97, the Peninsula became a reality. Had I built this tank with a peninsula in mind, I probably would have done the overflow on one end of the tank instead of the center despite the fact that the central overflow does a great job for surface skimming.

I don't have a center overflow but that's only because there was already an back overflow on the tank, but the tank is 72" x 60" so if it was clear acrylic on all 4 sides I most definitely would have gone center overflow, even if at that size I could only see it from 3 sides (like it is now... because not many people have rooms that are that wide open)

That said, 12" x 12" on a 48" x 48" tank might have an odd feel to it. In the center that will leave just 12" of space between your overflow and your acrylic on all 4 sides over 12 of your 48 inches. Then combine that with what most people do with center overflows (which is cover them up with rocks and what not) then that reduces that space even more. Then you might want to think how you're going to get water flow moving, just returns? closed loops? Those small gaps you're creating with your overflow might cause some inconvenient dead spots.

Now I could see some interesting ways to make that work, where you basically get 4 smaller 18" x 18" cubes in each corner where tinier fish could have their own "territory", but still have space to move between areas. But I think if you want that grand majesty of a large tank a center overflow of that size might ruin it.

by the lack of responses ( thanks too all who did repond).... where should I put the overflow on the 48x48x24 ?? thanks, Dean
