Dead rock into live rock

I have man-made white concrete-type dead rock that I put in my aquarium when I first set it up. I also added "dead" live rock (purple in color) that I was told would seed my white rock. It has been 4 months since my initial set-up.
I noticed today that my white rock has a coating of brownish-purplish with some green in it. Is this the rocks becoming live? or is it algae? And if it is algae, is that good or bad?

Once anything starts to "grow" or inhabit rocks it becomes "live".. bacteria, plants,corals, animals,etc...
dead live rock is basically an oxymoron.
ever met a dead live person?

But some stuff may still be "alive" enough to grow again on rocks that have been out of the water for a little while..

Sounds like your rock is doing fine.. (or normal).. pictures sure help.
You REALLY need to read the sticky posts at the top of this forum to gather the basic knowledge before you go further though..

Algae is normal at the start of any new system..
purple/pink would typically indicate coralline algae which is considered desirable among many.. It also comes in other colors..

A green algae/brown diatoms,etc.. is typically common with new tanks and will pass as the tank matures more provided you perform basic maintenance/water changes,etc...

Feel free to ask questions. But if you use the search tool here, you will probably find a dozen threads of people who already asked the same question. There is a wealth of information here. I would have been lost in the beginning without this site.
