dead rock?

in one set up i have is a 35 gallon with a 35 gallon sump/fuge. It has an almost useless skimmer on it and about 50 pounds of live rock. about a month ago i had to pull a 20-25pound rock out because of a crab. my question is, can i put the rock back into the tank without any adverse effects or do i need to cook it first?

Just rince it out real good and let it dry and you should be good

No way, cook it first. That rock will cause your tank to cycle again.

I would add 5-7 lbs of it a week to the display tank. The other 30 lbs of active live rock should prevent any spikes.

--and the bacteria should repopulate in days rather then weeks if you boil it ect

I can not add it like that as it is one rock weighing 20-25 pounds. I wish it were the other way .

nobody seems to think that a month is enough time for the die-off to decompose, atleast to a level that can be handeled by the LR in the tank? JMO but I think a good rince will take off alot of death, and the tank can handle the rest.

smash it or frag it--you get much better filtration from smaller pieces then you do from one big hunk--more surface area.:eek2:
and the smaller pieces are easier to move around if you need to rearrange the reef at sometime.

Weighing out the pros and cons in my head, I think I agree with what you are saying. I have decided to give it a good rinse and follow that with a bath in old tank water from a water change for a couple hours to be sure.

I think it is a bit of a nice looking rock to bust up. Lots of holes and crevices. I imagine it's why the crab decided to hide in it in the first place.

that is a nice looking piece. I have always favored big chunks as opposed to little for a better lookand bigger caves and overhangs. I dont blame you for not wanting to smash it. BTW it looks very clean. I think you will be just fine.

you could always place it on an ant pile and they will clean it so you don't have to.
If you want it clean and done naturally the ants will pick out any detris and left over food particles. But the bacterial will still take time. In a larger tank this will not be very visible but in a smaller one it will cause a larger spike. Ratios Pleeeeeeeese
