Dead Torch

I've had this Euphyllia for three years. I've fragged it many times. It just keeps growing and growing. Yesterday, I noticed half of it was brown and sloughing off; today the rest of it is gone.

Any ideas?

Everything else in the tank is just fine. Mostly SPS, but I've got some candy cane coral, micromussa and acans that are okay. The only change I've made is I have been adding nanochloropsis phyto, homegrown, for the last two weeks; a small amount every other day. I switched from DT to homegrown Fishie's Phyto -- LOL.

All help or ideas are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's what it was.

What causes that? Bacteria? It turned to a white skeleton over night. It had over ten heads. My oldest coral. Been fragged over and over. Just gone...

I'm not 100% but i think if the corals tissue gets damaged it leaves it open for infection. Euphyllia are one of the corals that are more prone to getting it i believe.

Oh my gosh that must be horrible! Ten heads and gone juts like that??? I did not know it could happen that fast. What do you do to save some of the heads? Frag then the minute you notice brown? Do you have any idea how the tissue could have been damaged?

I have no idea. I just started using home-grown phyto in the tank, but I'm really careful about keeping everything clean as I can - almost sterile, but not quite. It could have been that. But everything else in the tank is AOKAY.

By the time I realized it was going, it was gone. Came home from work and zippo! Trials and tribulations of reefkeeping.

I am worried because I have two heads that don't expand -- they are not getting enough light but I don't know how to attach it so all heads get light. I guess I need to frag it which I know is simple ... I don't want it to do what yours did.

That could be it too but the spot they are in I cannot change flow or light without moving or fragging ....

Fishie Nut, I had the same exact thing happen. I had a beautiful Yellow-tipped torch with 4 huge heads. did great for 6 months, one morning 2 heads were melting. I fragged the two "healthy" heads, they died within a week. All other corals were fine. I believe Brown-Jelly was uindeed the cause.

Torch is the most delicate of the Euphyllia genus of corals. They generally dont deal with being moved or harrassed well by anything. They also dont ship well. It's time to call some of the people you sent frags to for a head or two.
