dead?

If it isn't swimming and begins to float upside down.

Often fish will get discolored and look sort of slimy. Other fish will also eat them. All good clues.

But seriously lots more information is needed. In general, if the anemone is still "stuck" to a rock, glass, sand, etc. it is still alive.

If it's an anemone, it's a goner if the integrity of its skin is breached: ie, if it's streaming stuff through a cut or ruined tentacles, it's rare it recovers, and dead with an anemone is always a matter of how dead, because it's a sort of composite creature and part of it may continue alive until the catastrophe works its way around to that part. Don't wait for the process to go to its end, which is that of a soupy film over everything. Get it out before it gets the whole tank.
With a fish---dead is when its gills stop working.

This is not the experience of MANY experienced reefers. Particularly with BTAs.

poke it with a stick

Come on now, lets help out here. Poke it with a stick?
What does that do or show?
That you can be mean while an animal is dying?
Good gosh .

I can just imagine someone who doesnt know better going out in the yard , finding a stick and poking an anemone in the tank.
Of course who knows whats on that stick, but yea, stick it right in that tank and give it a poke.

Replys like this make me very sad.
If you cant help , why post?????

I am sorry, it was an attempt at some humor since no one seemed to know what kind of animal was in question. i shall refrain from such posts in the future.

False info

My Bta made a complete recovery after it burnt it's self on a heater on night leaving a wound about 2 cm wide and 3 cm long. there was loads of stringy stuff coming of the wound, but it healed completely within 1 week.

SK8 said it was rare, not impossible.

I would suggest that it is NOT rare. BTAs are particularly good at recoveing from unjuries if they are otherwise healthy. But since we have no idea what the OP is refering to (his grandmother perchance?) it is moot.

I thought the poke it with a stick comment was pretty funny based on the complete lack of info from the OP.

hey guys i havent been able to get on the internet in a while but i think it is back alive...i hope...but it seems like it is sticing well to the liive rock also all its tentacle things have grown back but it "pooped" out some nasty stuff today and i was like woah

Hi Tony,

Glad you're back. As you can tell we were having some fun with your post while you were gone.

Give us much information about your animal as you can. It looks like it is an anemone from you last post. What type/size anemone is it, what size tank is it in, what are your water parameters, what kind of lights, what are you feeding it, does it eat what you feed. The pooping is usually not a good sign. Was it sort of dark brown and REAL stringy?

Sticking to the live rock is a good sign.

Finally, how long have you had the tank set up and how long have you had the anemone and was it acting differently and then change or is this just the way he's been since you got him?

its a pink tip i bought it about a week ago then i rearranged my live rock and i guess it couldnt regrip its grounds and got sucked up the filter a little. i have had the tank for about 7 months and i have a 55 watt power compact on it. it is a 10 gallon tank. i havent fed it anything yet but i am going to feed it brine shrimp. the "poop" was like a lump

Thanks for all the help guys
tony

grab a copy of this: http://www.carlosreef.com/AnemoneFAQ.pdf
it is the anemone FAQ I posted about above

Also, do a search on http://www.wetwebmedia.com there is a lot of good info there.

Having him only a week and then rearranging the rockwork and having him get sucked up the filter a little is a lot to have happen all in a week.

I am sure this is a VERY stressed anemone.

Give him a little time, 2-3 days to just relax a little in the tank and find a spot where he will be comfortable. Then try to feed him a very small piece of scallop or raw cocktail shrimp. My LTA loves Formula 1 I just give him a thawed cube every couple days, I think he's about ready for 2 cubes per feeding. If you want to try formula 1 I'd suggest trying 1/4 to 1/2 cube first and see if he can keep it down.

Your lighting is probably adequate but some anemones really don't like PC lighting.

The "poop" was most likely him expelling all or part of his zooxanthellae. The process of him expelling this is commonly refered to as bleaching. You can find a lot of info on bleached anemones with a search here, the site above or maybe google. The short version of the story is that you will need to feed him pretty intensively for a few months for him to replenish his colony of zoo.
