ok well if no one will right on my thread there then answer my question... i am setting up a 120g tank. while im waiting to come up with the expenses for the expensive materials for that i thought about buying a 3g TOM deco tank...what do you think?

Looks like you've got a great plan, and you seem to be taking your time. That's good. Not easy, but good. As far as a 3 g tank--I wouldn't suggest it. If you're really anxious to get going, I'd suggest something a bit bigger. There is almost no room for mistakes with a 3g.

hmm as i have heard. well then what would you suggest? i want a small inexpensive AIO...maybe a 6g nanocube? or still too small... actually at liveaquaria the 12g are the same price as the 6gs for right now. how about that?

Most likely the reason for the slow boards is that this was a very nice weekend and people are still doing stuff outside.

If you're interested in a small tank to mess with in the meantime, and don't want to spend a lot, just pick up a 10g from walmart. A little live rock, sand, pick up a used PC light fixture, and the assorted other things needed for a tank and you're good to go.

such as? lol what would i need for a tank that size as far as a powerhead and what not i jsut want a zoa garden with maybe like a shrimp goby pair? or would that be too small for that. and what for filtration a modded HOB AC filter?

My first tank was a 2.5 mini bowfront with a powerfilter hung on the back and a 10k screw in bulb. While I would never tell anyone else to follow anything I have done I think I did the hardest thing first and lived through it so it made me a better reefer. Some other though I can see having hard time with a small tank and giving up. Also I will say either an autotopoff or constant monitoring of your water level is also mandatory with a small tank.

Old and boring but...

Old and boring but...

I may be old and boring but I was quite amused by the micro stuff that came with the live rock and the starter bag of caulerpa. Within a few weeks, the 6 gallon nano was teaming with life and at night it was like a great horror flick. Spaghetti worms, snails, pods, tunicates and who knows what.

I like the 10 gallon idea. It’s cheap and you can learn a lot. The main thing I learned is to leave it alone and let nature do its thing. You certainly need to have the right hardware and stuff to get going but don’t try to fix every little thing. Many times the cure is more deadly than the problem. And ask folks here before making changes. I heave learned a lot and I continue to learn. You have a great plan in the works, just take your time and go with the flow. I would be glad to give you some calerpa or cheato and a handful of goo from my fuge to get some biodiversity going. Just let me know when you are ready.

i dont know about that lol. but what powerhead would i use in a 10g tank?

On mine in the past I have used a MJ 600 or a MJ 900, along with a HOB filter to run media in or whatever. I never took the time to do all the mod things to make it a fuge. My 10g currently has a closed loop on it because I hated how much space the powerhead took up in the tank.

It's strictly for circulation. You have plumbing going out of your tank to a pump, which then pumps the water directly back into your tank. The only openings are in your tank, it doesn't drain into a sump or anything like that.

I'd pass on setting up a small tank because it'll only set you back in the $ column and eventually just take longer for you to get the new tank set up.

yea thats what i was thinking. i was thinking of writing all of the stuff down i would need and giving it to my parents so they could just buy me all the stuff i would need for a 10g setup for christmas i think it sounds good.

One advantage to getting a 10gal (or 20?) setup right now is that you can move everything to the 120 when it arrives, and then use the small tank for your QT.
