can you write off your tank expenses if they are part of your office decor? ;)

The response I always get to questions like this (and I've asked it, since my tank is in my "office/2nd bedroom" is "Well, you can try and see if you get away with it"... Doesn't seem worth the audit...

Yeah I can reintroduce myself to my wife today!!!!!

Remember:

An extension allows you additional time file your return not to pay your taxes.

One of the partners of my aquarium tech company just installed a 900g in wall tank in the forier right outside the elevators for one of their clients. This same business has a 180g in wall in a conference room. His monthly maintenance is over $3K per month, which includes maintenance supplies. He buys expensive fishes for his tank monthly. AND EVERYTHING IS 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE as long as his favorite hobby is kept at his business workplace. You can be sure that the owner enjoys all the benefits of his hobby, doesn't have to lift a finger to do any water changes and Uncle Sam helps pay for part of it. Isn't that something, that's how the tax system works. And not sure how much the system cost to setup, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was over $30K, which is also tax deductible. What a life.

that's exactly my point. ANYTHING and EVERYTHING "for the business/at the business" is tax deductible. This is why I'm debating on getting a reef setup @ our business. :) I'm out there 3 or 4 days out of the week, usually it's every other day, auto top off and feed every other day. All softies with fishes would be low maintanence and I get to enjoy when I'm not enjoying the one @ home. :)

Yep, the owner pays my aquarium technician $3K minimum per month (includes all supplies and food to feed the fishes). Water changes and wipe down of the viewing side every other day. The owner wants it completely hands off, so leaves the care to a professional aquarium techician.

Yes he means $3000, (three thousand).

Have to clarify that for Elite, he cheated his way into IT.

Where's my clamps?

Watch the owner get auditted :)

It won't happen. $3K is a drop in the bucket for his company. My guess is that his company probably grosses over $1M per month. So, it's all relative, $3K is nothing compared to $1M. Almost like petty cash fund. :D

He won't, they have no grounds. There are a lot of reasons to have an aquarium @ a business. For relaxation of customers as they wait, to keep them busy and kill time. Lots of reasons why the IRS will not make a fuss. Sometime having an aquarium can be a lure to bring in customers.

GO to places like Rain Forest Cafe in Southern CA (I believe there's one in SF as well but not sure about fish tanks) . There are 3 or 4 huge fish tanks in there a couple thousand gallon each easily and some interconnects. They're not going to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to setup these salt water tanks and not be able to write it off. Not to mention they need someone to keep it up and do the dialy maintenances.

EDIT: I've just confirmed that there's a Rain Forest Cafe in SF and yes there is a Salt Water tank there.

Read the 2nd review, A little Vacation right in the City.

FYI: I can even write off my toilet papers for our business.

I'm suprise there's no CPA in here to confirm this. So we can end this subject and Darci can go on with her fish tank in the office.
