Debate of the Decade: Reef-Safe Dwarf Angels

Does anyone think uncured or semi-cured liverock will pacify fish to keep them from nipping corals/clams? These types of rock will allow fish to graze upon it.

Uncured rock and fish is a bad combination. Maybe you meant something else?

They're nipping meat, so grazing on algae is not going to appeal to them, if that's what you meant.

DAY 2 (cont'd)

Tried nori this afternoon with no luck. But he's still gulping down the flakes and frozen preparations... I'll try nori again tomorrow. Right now I'm just attaching it to a clip, but I might rubberband it to a rock to see if that helps and maybe put a few drops of garlic extract to see if that will attract him to the nori. We'll see what happens...

Haven't heard anything about uncured rock helping at all, other than the fact that it probably has a good amount of algae on it. If anything, you might only use uncured rock in a tank that has already been established for a while and has steady parameters since you'll have a better chance of it not affecting the tank's levels.

DAY 3:

No real changes in eating yesterday except maybe a little less interest in the flake food in preference of the frozen brine and mysis (still no real interest in the Nori). I'm trying to feed 2 to 3 times per day to compensate for the lack of LR/algae (or at least not that much since there are only a few pieces of LR in the quarantine) to snack on throughout the day.

Any suggestions/tricks you guys have had luck with in getting a fish to eat nori? I'm currently just putting it in a clip, but was thinking of either: 1) Rubberbanding it to a LR and/or 2) Mixing it in with his frozen preparations so that it might pick up some of the scent/taste of what the angel is already eating (the brine/mysis).

Updates to come...

Yeah, just adding 2-3 pieces of uncured at a time to an established tank or swapping out pieces of cured rock already in the system with uncured rock.

There's a lot more to uncured rock than just algae. Sponges, worms, bristle worms and the like just to name a few.

1: Flame Angel, 1.5" at purchace from local LFS. Source unknown.
2: Showed some interest in Xenia when it pulses but never really picked at it. He doesn't touch the mushrooms, zoos, anthelia or kenya tree.
3: 55G tank with 70 lbs LR and a 10G fuge. Only coralline present it tank.
4: 1 small purple tang (going to my 150G tank when he gets to 3") and 1 watchman goby.
5: Feed mixed frozen food 1/day. Fuge produces a steady supply of shrimp that supplements this.
6: Yes.
7: 2.5 years in tank. No fights or bullying.

DAY 9 UPDATE:

Been a while since I've updated... not sure if anyone is even reading this, but either way... here's the update.

About Friday of last week, even though my Flame Angel was still eating like a pig (no nori still, but eating flakes and frozen preparations), I noticed that there was some discoloration (a lighter color then the surrounding tissue) on his left fin (which he was also kind of favoring or not using as much as his right fin) and also by his belly... it wasn't a fuzzy white growth like fungus, so I figured it had to be some type of bacterial infection. So Saturday after going to MAX (Marine Aquarium Expo, kind of like a trade show in SoCal), I picked up some free samples of various things, some of which were used to treat or dip bacteria-infected fish. So other than soaking all of his food with tetracyclene and Amino Acids (not sure if either of these work necessarily, but figured it wouldn't hurt to try), I also did about a 10% water change and put the recommended dose of the bacteria-fighting supplement in the new water. The next day, the discoloration was noticeably better and he was favoring his left fin less. I did another water change yesterday with the supplement and will see how he is doing when I get home today. I'll probably treat him for at least another 8 or 9 days or so whether or not the discoloration goes away, just to make sure he is 100%.

In hindsight, I'm sure glad that I didn't just add him to the tank straight from the fish store like many of us do. Hopefully, this will also give him more time in the quarantine tank to gain an appetite for Nori... :)

DAY 15 UPDATE:

Sad news... the young Flame Angel just couldn't get over the bacterial infection (or at least I think it was... there were portions of his body that started becoming a lighter color and it started spreading). He was eating like a pig up until the end though until yesterday when he would still eat, but not with his normal vigor... then this morning I found him laying on his side. Poor guy... he would have made an awesome addition to my tank.

Now I'll just have to keep my eyes out for another one and I'll post updates as they come.
