Deciding to frag rarities/LEs

What criteria do you use to decide when to frag your rare/LE stuff?

On a relatively regular basis I notice small frags of high dollar stuff for sale here on RC, and then when people post pics of the mother "colony" it is what I would consider a frag.

I have a decent amount of rare coral of all types, and I personally will not frag any of it until I am satisfied with its health and size (they will have to be a very large frag or a colony).

For example, recently I saw someone selling a 1/3" frag of Orenji danae, and when they posted a picture of the mother "colony" it was barely an inch and a half across!

I am not at all trying to flame or criticize anyone that frags frags, but I am wondering what causes you to decide to frag your coral.

For me fragging is a way of pruning a tank not a way of offsetting costs. But, that is just me. I do like buying frags though as I enjoy watching them grow. Also, aquacultured is the most likely to survive, and of course it keeps corals in the ocean.

fragging is a great way to make room in your tank and fill others, but I do agree that some of the "mother colonies" you see are barely frags themselves, but to each his/her own.

I agree 100%, and I like to let my stuff grow too. Granted, I frag stuff all the time, but my mother colonies are all pretty good sizes and in constant competition for real estate. Some of those selling threads are pretty funny. I like the ones where you get a 1/4 inch frag from a 1/2 inch mother colony and the frag hasn't even been made yet. At the least, those sellers could let the frags heal. I think they are worried it might die on them, and then they can't sell it. It just takes a little patience to let a frag grow, and IMO it is not worth losing the mother colony fragging stuff so small. Most grow like weeds anyways especially SPS.

I think a lot of people are just plain greedy. They are of a mindset that if it costs a lot of money then they want it, in order to afford the latest showboat coral they must sell 1/2" frags of the last latest showboat for $100/each:lol:

JMO, but I have been around a while;)

yea I agree Ive seen alot of pics of people with frag sized "mother colonies". people that are trying to make $$ and not into the hobby IMO

Damn Straight Nanook!

I think it's a good idea to frag all your stuff and spread it around to your friends and local reefers. They appreciate it and you never know when somthing terrible could happen and you'll be relying on others to get you (and your tank) back on your feet. I personally don't care about "LE" and "high dollar", if it looks nice, then I like it.

So true about the "LE" frags, its almost become the "Hollywood" attitude, whats the next greatest purse or who has the biggest sunglasses  Sorry ... fragging is a good thing in most cases like said, making room, save the coral itself, trading or selling. My criteria would be the same for any coral, whether LE or not, when I get enough branches without it looking like a hat rack when I frag it, but Im in the boat of letting most grow out now
