Deciphering dry humor at LFS

So I'm fairly new but I'm just now to the point where I am beginning to stock my first tank. Today I bought 2 small ocellaris clownfish and 3 green chromis. While checking out, a regular at the shop asked what size tank I have, I have a standard 75g with a 29g sump. He looked at my purchase and said straight-faced, "looks like you're about stocked then." Nothing else.

As I said, I'm fairly new but 2 clowns and 3 chromis doesn't seemed stocked for a 75, especially because I'm still planning on quite a few more fish. So, I guess just for peace of mind I need to ask, was he being serious or was that some tongue-in-cheek joke that I'm unnecessarily worrying over (social cues are not quite my forte)?

Adding 5 fish at once seems like a lot to me...

I've been feeding the beneficial bacteria pure ammonia in higher doses than the bioload that these 5 small fish could output for a week now and seeing it reach 0 ppm overnight. Also, these are very small fish.

You should have turned to the salesperson and said, "I guess I'll have to rethink any purchases for now"... I'm sure that the 'wise guy' would have quickly tried to save the sale!

That would be quite funny. At the time I was so confused, I couldn't really think of a response. I think perhaps he was trying to poke fun at the "small" size of my tank since he is a huge advocate for monster sized tanks.

To each their own. If you like your setup, good for you. You dont need to invite him to your house anyways haha...

He obviously has a small :eek1:
I'd go a step further and say find another LFS or another salesperson who can provide more positive feedback to your questions.

If you add sarcasm to the statement it changes things.

2 clowns and 3 chromis are nothing. I think you are reading way too much into it.

Somewhere down the road you will end up with a single Chromis regardless.

On that note, can you then add more chromis when you're only down to one? I really want a school again. He's always been peaceful and it seems that's the general consensus of the fish.

You can but you will still end up with one at the end.

Not exactly correct. I have a school of 6 now for a year with no problem. I think it has to do more with size of tank, amount fed, and cohabitants. Ive never seen ANY aggression with my chromis. However i could easily see them being bullied by other fish.
