Exactly how I did mine. I use the return hole in the overflow as the backup drain and run my return up and over the side. My tank is in my basement workshop so I'm not too concerned with aesthetics as I am functionality. So far it works just fine. Only thing I don't like about herbie is the fluctuating water levels as the filter socks clog up, but that has nothing to do with the tank itself. I believe the db tanks have something similar to star fire, but from what I have read "star fire" is a trademarked term. As far as scratching goes, honestly I haven't seen it happen yet, and I'm not the most careful person. I've had rocks hit te glass, picked up bits of sand with my mag float etc and have yet to see any scratches. It's good enough for me, I just wish the overflow kit was optional like aga does, it would be even cheaper....
