Deep water acros!!!

I've been seeing a lot of deep water acros lately for sale. I don't know scientific names or anything just being sold as deep water acros. Does anyone have one, and if so what are the requirements of these corals? I'm thinking they wouldn't demand as much light and possibly less current? Just wondering if anyone has any input on these guys!

The deep water moniker has nothing to do with where they come from or how much light and flow they enjoy.

over here when collectors sell a deep water acro it means they collected it from deeper water and yes less current and light required, they are easier to keep.....not sure what you guys mean by it tho, this is just how an aussie collector describes where he got them from. HTH

I have a "deepwater purple acro" that was grown locally at a coral farm using natural sunlight, usually sits at a minimum 600ppfd (PAR). Mine is sitting about 10" under a 250DE Phoenix and no problems for the first week :D.

No pics right now, it looks like a small brown twig, but I saw the mother colony before it was fragged, and when in good shape, it looks lovely even under low K sunlight.

I have a small frag of A. elegans (easily considered a "deepwater acro" by name). Takes full flow and light...amazing color!

Peter, Very nice :). The A. elegans is a lovely coral. The growth pattern is really nice as they get larger. Tim (tfp) has a really nice one that I love. I had it growing beautifully until the demise of my tank last year. It is on my short list of "must have" acroporas.

I am a total fan of the "deep water" acros. My favorites are A. echinata, A. lokani, A. elegans, A. granulosa, A. simplex....and so on. I love the color and the smoothness...really nice growth patterns to most of them as well. I have found most do well under a variety of conditions :D.

Thanks Alicia. Yeah, I'm a huge fan of this little piece. My friend has the original, a nice size mini colony. But his tank is kind of in the pooper right now :( Hopefully his piece is still OK, otherwise I'll have to steal it from him :D

Too bad that they didn't give you the right name. It is not a granulosa, as the axial corallites are not flat. The one pictured has tapering axial corallites.

I would estimate that it is A. caroliniana.

thanks, yeah i've questioned its species but my ID knowledge is poor at best.. its one of my fastest growing/favorite corals. i really like its growth pattern

i'd like to see some more deepwater pics if anyone has any to share!

There reason I asked about species is it looked similar to one of mine that Vlad (atomik) identified as A. multiacuta. Does it look similar to yours??

And just for show a picture of my a.echinata. I have had it for 2 months I think....it hasnt encrusted yet but seems to be doing well with polyp extension and some growth on the branches. Im especially proud because I found it for $40 at the LFS.

It doesn't get much more "deepwater" looking than this:

last semi-decent shot if it:

recent terrible shot of it, shows growth patter though:

I really like "deepwaters". Here's a caroliniana from a friends tank I had to take a pic of the other day.

pics do not do it justice. this thing is nice!
