Define "Water Column"

Can you tell me what a water column is in an aquarium? Is it just a smaller scale of what is seen as "current" in the ocean? Does the water column only apply to the display tank, or is the sump flow included?

Basically, water in the display tank is water column however that term normally is used in the context of in the ocean.

It's usually a reference to the water that is circulating in the system, including the sump.

In my tank I tend to think of it as the water in the display tank in the top 1/4 of the tank.

Basically the water that is constantly being circulated, and pulled through filtration.
