For the most part, the skimmer performance has nothing to do with the acrylic tubing. The main thing that sets the Deltec skimmers apart is the pump and matching body size to this pump.
If you look at Deltec pricing, when you add an extra ehiem pump to the skimmer, it jumps up in price aroung $500+.

what makes a neddle wheel skimmer is the pump. The better(more expensive) the pump the better the skimmer. Have you seen the price for a bubble king they cost thousands.. why because red dragons( the pump) cost thousands.
dont base performance on looks...

to tell you the truth its what you want and what you can pay. IS the dletec worth the extra money? that depends on how well you want your skimmer to work. If you drive a porsche you drive it because you can afford it and you wat the extra performance... same with a deltec vs octopus. I have never heard anyone rave about how great their ocopus skimmer was but look in the deltec forum and there are hundreds of people tanking about how good the skimmer is.
What i tell people is that you skimmer is your main filter you spend thousand on your tank and then you skim on what keeps it clean? why? i wanted to get the best skimmer possible so that i never have to upgrade and i dont want to have to do water changes very often to make up for a skimmer that can not remove everything out of the water that i want it to.
