Team RC
my dendro that has been doing great has been closed for the past week. All the other corals in the tank appear to be normal

Salinity 1.026
PH 7.9-8.1
temp 79-81
alk 9.5 (has been constant for months

I haven't checked other params as I usually only check alk

I do a 15% water change every two weeks

any ideas or experiance with Dendros closing for a period of time

my duncans all look great as do all other LPS and SPS

I have over 150+ huge japanese dendros in my tank, and had been in love with them and taking care of them for about 4 years now. From my experience, they open all day. I had some experience where they are closed. Check and see if any fish nor invert is pinching them so they will spill the food out and the fish or the invert can eat the spilled out food. another tip is if the food that u feed is a bit large or not 100% defroze, they will turn bad inside the the dendros. that will eventually kill that polyp. if one polyp is dead because of that. You can expect about 4-5 more big ones die around it. Only the babies can live on. Check for any brown jelly or algae growth on the orange tissue also.

They are my favorite and hate to see any of them hurting! feed smaller, finer pieces of food.
Good luck!!

thanks for the feedback

I'll just add they have been doing great for the past 9 months (started with 2 heads now 6) and I don't think I've change anything but maybe they got some bad food.

there is no external sign of damage, injury or sickness, they still have their color etc, just pulled in for about 6 days now

the dendro opened yesterday, so we fed it and it's fully open again today

I don't know for sure what upset it to close for 7 days or what made it reopen, but after ~2 months I did change the GAC on Sunday so maybe something got in the tank that the fresh carbon cleaned up.
