Dendro Growth Question

OK, possibly a dumb question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.

How does the base of a dendro colony grow (ie, expand outward instead of up)? I have a colony of about 15 mature heads, and 30+ babies growing off the mature heads.

Does it just grow up and out, like a vase? It seems I would need to epoxy the base down eventually to keep it from tipping. But then how did it grow the hard branches to begin with?

This may be very elementary, but sometimes I miss stuff along the way. :hmm5:

Bump, anyone? Here's a pic of the colony currently. The babies are all along the back and down low in the middle, so you can't really see them.
