I wouldn't necessarily say that... it would obviously be different than growing an Acropora species for five years into a three foot across bohemoth, but we can still have long term success with these corals, albeit might be through propagation of their "babies".
Also, Cluade noted that the disappearance might be due to currents blowing them away, which we would not experience in our aquariua.
Mike, when yours was dropping sclerites did any of them survive on their own?
I worked at an aquaculture facility that brought these in all too often (as they continuously went downhill), but as last ditch efforts they would drop "mini colonies" (1/4 - 1/2") and those I was able to grow for quite a while - then they would sell, and likely, unfortunately perish
Honestly I only found one that looked like I could try to grow it - but I didn't mount it onto anything just wedged it between some rocks, and it got blown away somewhere. Next time I will mount the frags properly and see how it goes.
