Do derasa clams like to be placed in the rock or in the sand? I have 2x150W MH over a standard 55 AGA. TIA.

derasa and squammy = sand
maxima and crocea = rock

Squamosa's are found on the reef(rocks). Derasa's when they are small will most commonly be found on the reef, when they reach sexual maturity you jettison themselves to the base of the reef. most of the time the substrate there is a hard calcium cabernet.

clams will only be found in sand in a very sheltered area. sand is dynamic , blows around and moves. a clam, any clam, wouldn't last long buried in the sand

I 100% agree with mbbuna. Squamosas are rock clams. Most people dump them to the sand because of their size, butthey love grabbing and wedging into rocks.

I think Mbbuna has been huffing a bit to much kalk powder-
"most of the time the substrate there is a hard calcium cabernet."

Cabernet?! Then again, my typing is so much worse, I should keep my clam shut.

My squamosa wont stay on the rock and love it on the sand.

Here's a thought, take a flattish piece of rock and semi bury it in the sand. Put your sqammy there. It'll attach to the rock.
