Deresa Clam

oh i see :D Hey i got another question though, now that my clam it attatched to the rock how do i move it. I don't want to move it anytime soon, but it is going to get way to big for my tank eventually..........

Derasas should be on the sand bed because unlike Croceas and maximas (rock boring clams) Derasas actually lose the threads as an adult and rely on their weight to stay put in the sand.

Derasas are lower light creatures and like most SPS corals feed where light is inefficient, or/and use both sources for nutrients.

It's not exactly that Maximas are harder they just require a bit more resources than the lower light clams. If I were to name a harder clam amoungst the crowd it would prob be the Crocea only because the slightly higher vunerability to parasites due to their larger abyssal opening (below the clam).

As for lighting having a halide (be it DE or SE) and 20 inches of depth you could have a Maxima on the floor and it should be fine. The only time you'll need to feed the clam is when it's surface area is not large enough to hold enough zooanthallaxe to sustain itself. On average at 3-4 inches the clam can solely sustain itself via light (usually, it all depends on how much light you have for it). Before that it's nice to have phyto to feed it, live being the better choice.

As to the number of clams it's no so much how much light you have but conditions of your tank and calcium supplementation. Clams obviously can't grow without calcium, so if you have little calcium you have little stunted clams.

I use live phyto, it's easy to get a starter culture and make your own, or if you are lucky you know someone who makes it. Problem with phyto is not finding it but how much to use and when. It is better to under feed than to over feed only because when it rots in your tank... whoooweee algae bloom city.

Move a clam that has threaded to a rock can be a pain.. especially with the rock-boring clams. You need to be careful, but in short you need a razor and slowly cut the threads closest to the rock and slowly lift the clam from place. Never, never yank the clam from it's spot only because you'll end up pulling the threads from the clam and not from the rock and the chances of survival afterwards is pretty poopy.

i thought they use their foot to hold on, shows how much i know lol I guess he attatched over night, but if the attatch does that mean they are happy with that spot? I guess if he wasn't he would have moved lol So from what you said he will loose the threads though. How big are they when they loose thoes?

Depends but I believe it starts at around 7 or 9 inches? I have a 9-10 Derasa, and when it was about 8 inches it lost the threads... I lifted it it off the sand slowly to check under it and there were no threads.

ok thanks, i think 7-9 in will be to big to sit up on the rockwork so i guess when the time comes, i'll be breaking out the razer lol
