deresa dropped bysus

I bought a deresa a couple of days ago. When it was put into the bag it appeared that the bysus was securely attached to some rubble (good sign). However when I got it home this had losened and by the end of acclimation it had dropped off ( bad sign). I have read that deresa's drop their bysus at some point but know that with most clams an unhealthy bysus spells doom. How likely is it that this clam will make it. Thanks in advance for your help.

A clam can and should recover from losing it's byssal attachment. It usually does this from shipping stress.

As long as the clam looks good otherwise, don't sweat it. It can and should regenerate a new byssal attachment.

Also most larger Derasa's and Squamosa's once large enough seem to abandon their attachments and just sit there under their own weight.

Is the entire gland gone? Or did it leave behind just a clump of stringy white material? My maxima "snipped" himeself from a rock and leaped onto my sand bed once and his gland was fine. He left behind a pretty large clump of stuff.

Thanks for your reply Rob. And congratulations on your baby. Best thing that ever happened to me!

Sloth, It dropped the whole thing. At least the bottom part. Came off clean like it was meant to. No byssal threads left behind.

thanks, Chris

So does the clam just have a big hole where the gland was?

Mine came off "clean like it was meant to" as well. It looked like someone just took some scizzors and snipped it off the rock.
