Diagnosing Ich or other condition, treatment, freshwater dip Q's

Guys, my apologies in advance. I run a v-Bulletin forum on my other hobby and I know all about the notion of using the search feature before asking a question already answered a thousand times.

I'm not finding what I'm looking for.

My two clowns have been in a "passive" QT, an established tank, good parameters, with no treatment for observation. Yesterday one showed some ich-ish white spots. I am not sure they were true ich, however. The spots were not tiny and round, but were elongated a bit, like dinky grains of white rice, and were visibly protruding slightly from the skin.

This morning, about 13 hours after initial observation, the biggest of those white spots has now stretched out into a mucous-like string. There is one dot that's new right between his eyes, and the other existing dogs seem to have gotten less opaque and more mucous-like.

Robert Fenner's book, THE CONSCIENTOUS MARINE AQUARIST, suggests freshwater dips. It appears I have a choice between formaldehyde or methylene blue as an additive. I will probably lean towards methylene blue as it appears to be a bit more conservative. He suggests buffering RO/DI water with baking soda to a pH of 8.0. Since, in theory this water is pure, there should be a known addition rate of baking soda to get to this range. Can anyone point me to a starting value? I don't have a pH meter, but can do the quick and dirty wet test with my Sera Marine kit.

Questions:
  • Any suggested addition rate for baking soda into RO/DI water to buffer to pH of 8?
  • Any ideas for freshwater dip recipes?
  • Any links to images of clownfish, or others with ich and ich-like visible symptoms for comparison purposes?
  • Anyone with any experience or ideas on what this may be and how to treat for it?

That's progably a good set of questions for now.

Thanks! Chris

Looks like you got the ICH friend.. maybe I can get some backup on that..

Possibly time to set up a hospital tank.. perhaps someone with more experience can give you more info.

The stringy description is a little troubling, and the pics look like the white spots are quite large when compared to textbook Crypt. I would lean towards Brook rather then Crypt. Copper is easy to get, but formaldehyde isn't, start looking around for some just in case. If it's Brook, it's a quick killer, so it may be a good idea to move the little guys to a hospital tank and start actively treating them.

Thanks much guys.

I believe it is probably Brooklynella. We did a freshwater dip last night and he looks much better. Will treat the QT tonight when I get home from work. Both clowns, currently in the QT, looked great today!
