Diamond Goby

Just got a diamond goby a couple days ago. I saw him the first few days but haven't seen him at all today. Is it common for the goby to hide?

IME, no. The only time I see them hide is if they are being bullied or sick. They are also quick to jump, so I would check around and hope for the best. Could you give some details about your tank including the rest of your fish?

Their a great little fish and I wish you good luck!
Mike

tank is 75 gallon, with 40 gallon sump.

Fish include
-hippo tang
-2 clowns
-2 chromies
-2 spotted cardinal
-coral beauty

-3 shrimp
-2 emerald crabs
-snails/hermits

The top is just about fully covered, checked all around the tank and see nothing. The first couple days he did hide under a rock when not out cleaning, but I can see under it and don't seem to see him in there anymore.

If he is only missing for a few hours I wouldn't be too concerned.

+1.

I guess I misread it, being that a "a couple of days" and "first few days" where in the post... I thought it was missing for longer than just a day. They can sometimes be off with our day/night schedule since they come from half-way around the world. Mine, as most do, excavate under a rock and cover up in entry at night for protection. They are in complete darkness and reliant on their internal clock which is not the same as ours. Perhaps, he chose another rock than the previous one. Hopefully that's all it is. On the downer side, it is possible for him to have past and have been consumed by the CUC. Are you clowns Perculas? If not, then there could be aggression. If so, then I like your mix.

Again, good luck and please keep us updated.

p.s. I bought two from a lfs that seemed to have bonded. I put them into my 180 with 250 lb. of live rock and only saw one after the first day. I assumed the other had died, but to my surprise, it showed up nearly two months later. It was thin and there was definitely aggression from the other diamond goby. I caught the dominant goby and put it into my refugium and the lesser one stayed out in the open. That was my reason for suggesting the possibility of aggression. It was not the first fish to have done this. I had a Black Capped Basslet that I didn't see for at least 3 months and assumed that it was dead. When it finally showed itself, it was thin and beat up. I removed a wrasse that was giving it chase and all was better.

Real sorry to hear that, but thanks for keeping us in the loop. Wonder what happened... they are big jumpers, could have been injured attempting to leap out. Was the fish ever put through a QT process? Did it eat in the lfs?
