Diary of a Newbie's 46g Tank. What to do Next?

Additional Mod Comments

First things first, I hate my old 2MP camera! I cannot get accurate pictures at all, they are either yellow or blue :( h

Ok that rant is now finished. Back to the mod. The fit and finish of the mod is just like what smcnally said. You would never know it was not direct from maxijet. The pastic gaurd is literally CNC machined in PHReefs workshop. Woulnt we all love to have a CNC at home?

Installation
Installation of this mod was a breeze. Litally pop the propeller into the maxijet prop spot and the magnet just sucks it right in. Then you take the grey gaurd place it over the prop then it twists into place in a locking position. The only thing to make sure of is that you have the tip of the prop go into the small hole at the end of the gaurd.

Pros
-- Extemely high flow in a fairly wide dispersal similar to a Seio.
-- The flow easily pushes 2000 gph.
-- You can trim the prop to reduce the flow to nearly 1000gph.
-- The colors match
-- Very very well made and precision machined.

Cons
-- The flow was far to high for my tank and blew the sand around, so I trimmed the prop and reduced it to 1000 gph
-- The prop makes more noise than a Seio. I have an almost completely silent tank due to all of my equipment being located in my cellar (except for when I get air in my pipes, but that is another story), yet the prop noise is noticeable. So by gauging it I would say it is noisier than my Seio but far quieter than my American Iwaki.
-- People ar estill undecided on whether these can be used on a wav emaker, I would suggest against it.

I do have good news tho. The onlything I asked for christmas from the family and wife are gift certificates so I can buy a new camera :)

Can anyone recommend the best affordable digicam fo reef pics? I am looking for under $350.

Updated tank pictures.

Updated tank pictures.

I have tried all the different white balances but just cant get the tank to look right in photos. The colors are perfect in person:

2x175w XM 10,000k MHs driven by a magnetic ballast
2x110w URI VHO Actinics driven by a ARO ballast

Very white yet flourescent - lots of purple!

On to the pictures....

Hi,
I'm kinda curious about your salinity, you listed 1.0225 at the beginning of this thread, and didn't see anywhere that you changed it, I was under the impression that full marine salinity was 1.025-1.027, not sure how much it matters since all your corals appear to be doing pretty good!

Hey Miz - you are right, I have sloly bumped the salinity up to around 1.25 or 1.26 (still using one of the crappy plastic hydrometer)

Thanks for stopping by. How is your 20g doing? And which distro u use for linux? :)

The 20L is doing great, coraline everywhere, the side walls are completely covered, it's actually a little too small, i'd like to do a more open aquascape, love your arched setup! and I can't put the torch coral where I want it, it'd squish up to the glass :)
We've got the 46 cleaned out, but my wife is trying to talk me into a 90RR tank ;)
The best thing I ever bought for the 20 was a refractometer, I can highly recommend it, between it and the auto topoff, my salinity stays exactly where i left it, and it makes dosing calk a breeze.

I've got about 18 machines running Gentoo Linux, I like the DIY feel without all the work of 'linux-from-scratch' :)

I'm still tagging along.....

I'd drop the swing arm--

this refractometer is pretty affordable-- its about $42 or $43 with shipping-- (I hate that they don't list shipping on that site til you give them your payment info)...

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11275&ref=2020&subref=AC

Its been on sell at least 6 months-- ($25 off)-- I think its their regular price now....

ONly downside is there is no internal light... need to use in a bright room.

I was following your thread via subscriptions earlier, but somehow I lost the subscription.

Everything looks great. Especially the new 75g RR :D Do you like the change to the 75g? Much more room or any complaints about the dimensions (I know we all hate the 13" depth on 40g and 46g)

Miztic
I was gonna say does any Linux geek use anything but Gentoo now adays?:) If I could assist your wife - you definitely need to do the 90RR instead of a 46. As you can see from this thread I was not pleased with the 46 and the overlow ....

Spuds
Hey Spuds great to see you sitll here! Ya the swing arms sucks :) I heard those cheaper refractormeters are still great. As for light thats not a problem just take alook into the Metal Halide of course....

xtrangx
I love the 75! it is ten times better than the 46. The biggest problem I had was with the overflow. I can not stand external overflows. I had at least three times here either a snail got into the overflow Jtube or the siphon broke and I had water all over my hard wood flow from an overflow. The 75 seems to be the perfect dimentions - the same foot print as the 90 but a lil shorter. I find the 75 to be pretty tall myself I couldnt imagine aquascaping much higher. The stand is very very sturdy. If I remember from your tank thread I think my stand iver very much like yours. Yours was 2x4s painted with white paint? My stand is made ith 2x4s and 2x6 headers and then skinned with 3/4" Wood painted gloss black

Yep, that was my thread/stand. I'm really hoping I can upgrade. The biggest problem is finding someone local to buy my stand (which I'd modify for a 55g). There aren't too many reefers in Kansas.

Do you have any complaints at all with the tank?

Hi robilium,

Your tank looks great, I'm going through something somewhat similar to you except my tank is a 40g Long(like xtrangx's) and will be a 120g RR. I also had problems with the overflow and hope the internal drains will make me feel better.

Anyway everything looks great.

I second the refractormeter.:D

No complaints at all with the 75 the size seems just right. Sometimes I wish tangs were smaller so I could have a fews tho :)

However, I dont like the tradeoff of having to maintain a much bigger tank just to have a few more tangs :)

If you dont have one .... borrow one! And now... the long awaited good pictures

Ok I borrowed my friends kick *** $800 SLR camera and $400 lens. Even a ******* like myself was able to take decent pictures. Well at least I think they are decent. The color is much more correct.

So on to the many many pictures.

Dude I named my bicolor blennie lennie also.....haha man i thought i was being original and funny.....anyone else name their blennie lennie?
