Diatom bloom, Zoa's closed up?

Hi all,

This is my first post as I am still relatively new to reef tanks and this is my first ever forum lol 😊.

My tank is around 6 months old and I seem to be having another diatom bloom. Firstly is this normal to see even in a fully cycled tank? I have 2 clown fish 2 cardinals and a cleaner shrimp as well as the rest of my clean up crew. (At this point I have 10 Nassarus snails and 7 turbos. I have a good size Pulsing Xeinia colonoy as well as a decent amount of green star polyp. These are both thriving and expanding as I understand they should be. Last week I added a large Zoa frag with a few different colonies attached.

They originally opened up no problem but after a day or so I noticed some brown algae (Diatoms?) that has now taken over the tank fully, nothing else in the tank seems bothered by this but the zoa's have closed up and haven't opened again since, it has now been about 3 days since I last saw them open, they seem to have some silk like mucus covering them? Under the moonlight bulbs they still seem to be slightly neon coloured around the tips.

I have also noticed a small snail that must of hitched on the frag, could this be the cause?

Ammonia 0ppm
Ph 8.0
Nitrate 10ppm
Salinity 1.024
Temp 78.8
Nitrite 0ppm
Dkh 145ppm
Calcium 480-520
Phos 0ppm

There are no obvious dead spots with flow and the lighting is 4 T5 bulbs 2 x white. I also have a Fiji blue led strip that goes on for a few hours at night when I'm sat watching tv just for a moonlight effect. The lights are otherwise on around ten hours a day.

Sorry if I've droned on or missed vital info any help would be appreciated,

John

Probably isn't the snail. Looks like a little Nassarius snail. Harmless, and good cleanup for your sand.

Zoas can be fickle things. When I see detritus or any nuisance algae around mine, I take a turkey baster and blow off the crap in and around the colony gently. Maybe they are just a little aggravated.

You said you added a large frag. Was it big, like a piece of live rock? Or just a larger frag plug?
