Diatoms in sandbed, help?

Hey guys, I have diatoms (i think) in certain areas on my sand bed. if i buy hermit crabs, the diatoms will be gone for like a day then back again. its like my sand just turns a browish almost red color. any ideas on how to get rid of it ?

If it is diatoms they will go away on their own they are common in new tanks.
