Having some heating issues and have been putting bags of ice in the tank to keep it cool. But what if i froze some DI water and put the ice cubes in the refugium? Is that ok? Or would I have the same nutrient issue as I would if I put regular ice cubes in?

If you make ice cubes out of RO/DI water then it defrosts you'll have the same RO/DI water (without nutrients) However they could be contaminated in icecube trays, etc... during freezing process. You could make a small batch of ice cubes, then defrost it and measure TDS of melted water. If measurements are ok then go ahead. However if you have someone living in your fuge, putting ice cubes there will decrease local (to the fuge) water temperature quite a bit.

Nothing living in the fuge yet...but I blocked off the return pump from the main part (makeshift bubble trap) , so I'd put them in there. And I was planning on using styrofoam cups to freeze the water.

Put the water into a 2 liter coke bottle that you have cleaned with RO/DI water. freez the water than cut the bottle off and put in tank.
