Did anyone ever find any Southdown?

The 120 has been set up for a few weeks now (with water and nothing else), so it about time to get some sand going in it... Did we ever find any? I don"t know if I could explain/justify a trip to New York for 150# of sand to Jennifer:rolleyes:.

I have been way to buisy to reaserch it. I wonder how much it would cost to have a pallet shipped down? I am sure enouph club members would grab it up.

I'm sittin' on about 5 bags of it at home. That stuff's like GOLD!

I managed to get the Hickory Hollow Home Depot to transfer some in for me a few years back (back when I was planning a 75g), but I have forgotten from which store it came. Either Texas or Kentucky is what's ringing a bell with me.

I know Pioneerlog had some shipped from Kentucky. If I could get a picture of the bag (an item # would be great), I'd be on my way...

I stopped in about 4 Home Depots in Southeast PA. None of them had Southdown (called 3 in South Jersey, no dice either). I've heard of some people using Kolorscape (in a blue bag) which is distributed by Old Castle and I found some of that, so I bought it. After I drove 6 bags 800 miles home I found out that they did not pass the vinegar test. A number of people on RC claimed they did the test and it worked... maybe 2 different sands bagged and sold under the same name? I was too much of a whimp to try it out in my new 90. I was thinking about keeping one, trying it out in the 29 that I'm slowly turning into a reef tank, and returning the rest to the Home Depot here (I think they have to take them back regardless of if they carry it or not). I know it won't buffer the tank, but I'd be interested in if there were any other drawbacks to using it.

Anyway, if someone is interested in them, I have five 40 pound bags that I'd sell for $6 a pop. That's about what I paid and about what I would get if I took them back to HD. If you want them, let me know ASAP, because taking them back was going to be a weekend trip.

nothing is wrong with that sand. Aragonite does not provide any buffering until the pH drops below around 7.5. So buying aragonite sand with just the intentions of buffering is waisting money. If your ph is that low in the first place you have other concerns.

if the bags are white sand i would love to take them off your hands! i just wany southdown because its white more than anything.

Angela, the stuff is pretty darn white... I think it would look pretty good. Come take a look at it if you like.

TitansFan, I'm gonna give it a try, but since I didn't use it for the 90, I'm going to have way more than I need whether it works out or not.

Give the co-op in the 'boro a call gary. That's where i got all mine when i had it. He ordered in a pallet for me. Maybe they could go smaller. It was yardright. Same stuff, just a 45 pound bag. Clear bag with a cartoon kid on the front with a sandshovel.

Let me check wioth Co-op, too. They are right down the road from me.

Daniel, you don't by chance have an item number do you? Did you just ask for Yardright sand?

It's been awhile gary. 3/03 is when i got it. There are two buildings right across the street from one another. One for larger farming supplies on the right, and one on the left hand side. The one on the left has more home based products (sands, mulch, etc). There is actually a rep for oldcastle/yardright that you can get in contact with that serves the surrounding area (tennessee and eastern ky if i remember correctly). I did some googling to find him.
