Did anyone lose power?

I lost it yesterday for about 3 hours. Had to run the generator. First time I've had to use it. (used)

At what point would everyone hook up pumps, etc...I was at work for a bit so asking the wife didn't seem nec. at the time.

Boy that sucker is loud! :D
 
I lost it yesterday also. Some animal got fried in a transformer. Had to run my gen also didnt know how long it was going to be out.

So, what is an appropriate amount of time to wait? I'm assuming it changes based on volume of water. Is there a formula?
 
We lost power at my house a few weeks ago and didnt hook up my generator till power had been off for 14hrs and didnt lose anything. Now today power has been off at home again since 7 p.m. ,hopefully restored by morning but atleast the store didnt lose it !!

That seems like a very long time. Idealy, what would you suggest?
 
To be safe, I would try to get a pump running within 6-8 hrs or atleast a battery bubbler. We got power back last night at 2 a.m. !!
 
Power outage can mean different things for different tanks. Stocking levels, presence of a DSB or not, overall water quality, ambient room temperature, etc all play vital roles. I think the key is to get something going as soon as possible, it just isn't worth taking a chance with all the life we have in our tanks.
 
Just because I am tempted to freak out the next time I loose power for 30 seconds. How much am I looking at for a generator and what should I be looking for in a generator?

Depends on what you're all wanting to run in the event of a power outage. Tank, fridge, air, etc...

Things like microwaves eat it up. Air conditioning might not be an issue. It's different for everyone. I have a 5000 watt one. Lights aren't that important to me but pumps are but I also have tunze which are low voltage. Look on craigslist
 
I was looking at them yesterday at Home Depot. 1200W should cover what have in the tank. Then another one of those for the house and as a fail safe. I think I'm going to go with that in the near future...

The reason I want to go with 2 is because the 3000W and 5000W are huge and space is an issue with the condo... These 2 I could stack in a outside closet and just leave the dood open if/when I run them...

what do you mean "door open"???

Just get a 3000+ and that will be all you need. A 2nd one isn't needed.

If you're concerned about space, look at the inverters. Hooks to your battery. They work great and are about the size of an external DVD drive. Get a couple 2000w if you're worried about space. You have a patio, correct?
