Did I buy a bad fish

Aquarium Depot in Sacramento. Its doubtful I'll buy from them again. The clerk clearly saw the state of the fish in the tank and should have advised me against the purchase. When I was at another store looking at a fish the owner said that one didn't look good to him and sold me a better one.

Ultimately, it's on me and I just need to learn what questions to ask.

It is tough to get a good handle on livestock in the beginning. Eventually you will get use to what to look for. Also, you will find out what LFS to buy from. Good luck

No. Test their salinity with the same instrument you use to check your own. Never trust the numbers from someone else.

Don't hesitate to bring your refractometer to the store. I've asked and set my qt to match only to find that when I open the bag after temp acclimation its a lot different.

I always drip acclimate and have never had a problem. When the volume goes up, pour some out and slow drip more. Depending on the fish, about an hour or so of slow dripping and then into qt.

But clean your refractometer and rinse it well if dipped in store water.

Always, belt and suspenders, test the bag water before believing anything. And double check your own qt water to be sure your head is straight.
