Did I do it right? HCl wash

Last week, I finally got to cleaning some pukani and tonga shelf rock. There was about 15 pounds of tonga shelf, and 30 pounds of pukani. I first hosed them off with regular garden hose water, then I sunk the pukani in a 20 gallon tub filled with RO/DI water. I took out a gallon of water, and added a gallon of muriatic acid at 20 degrees Baume (31.45%). After a half hour of bubbling, I took the rock out, emptied the tub, and repeated the process with tonga shelf. However, the tonga shelf rock had about 5 gallons of RO/DI, and about half a gallon of muriatic acid.

When I took out the first piece of pukani today to clean it, there were still quite a few dark spots. The rock wasn't bleach white like I thought it was supposed to look like. Instead, there are patches of pure white, off white, and black spots on the rock. I went ahead and scrubbed it, and it looked kind of cleaner.

Did I do the acid wash correctly? I noticed that the bottom of the rock tended to look darker than the top of the rock....is this supposed to be right?

I seriously have the worst luck when it comes to asking questions on this forum...I always have to bump the thread to get somebody to answer...

I've not done a muriatic acid wash yet, but you might have better luck in the advanced topics, reef chemistry, or even new to hobby subforums.
