Did i fail with lighting for my 40g?

The light you originally linked is pretty outdated and IMO not suited for a 40BR. For $400, you can get a Lumenbrite + Ballast or a 6-Bulb Tek Light with bulbs (which is also a lot nicer than the Current Nova). I have a 36x18x21'' 57G Aquarium and grow SPS near the sand with my T5's. Hope this helps! :)

can you tell me where you can get this and what kind of bulb configuration ya have.also what brand bulbs.

I bought mine from ReefGeek but a lot of vendors sell them online. 3x ATI Blue Plus, 1 KZ Figi Purp and 2x ATI Aquablue Plus' bulbs will give you an awesome color combo with good PAR. Hope this helps! :)
 
I have a 36" 65 Gallon and am rocking 2x 150 deHQi 14k's with some t-5 and PC atinics in a frankenstein hood. Working great for me and doesnt cook the water too much.
