Did I fry my Ro/DI?

I can't find it anywhere, but I thought I remember reading that putting hot water through an RO/DI does something bad to it. I was cleaning out something in the sink, then turned on the RO/DI without turning the spigot back to cold. I filled a 5g bucket with hot water.

Anyone know?

Hi MJ,

I would check the outgoing with a TDS meter just to be sure. I have by mistake put hot water through my RO unit for a short period with no apparent harm.

I don't think it would be an issue. During the guy's speech about filtration last year at the club he mentioned that the water is warmed to ~70 degrees before entering the RO systems he built and that is the maximum efficiency temperature. He also said that there would be more rejected (waste) water at colder temps. So I would imagine that hotter water may just allow a little more solids through and a little less rejected water.

It really depends on the type of membrane. A TFC (thin film composit) membrane can melt, weld itself together with hot water. This will greatly reduce the ability to filter your water and increase waste water. Run a few gallons of water and monitor the amount of waste Vs. the amount of product water. This time (temp) of year your should be looking at a 3-4 to 1 ratio. Then check your TDS in the product water.

Filmtec membranes have a max operating temp of 113 F. That's hotter than you'd want to touch with your bare hand.

Thanks. it seems to be producing the normal amount and tds is still 0, so I guess I didn't damage it.
