ok.....first...to be sure........I dont think I got ripped off......B and H is a great company and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Better put....did I just rip myslef off??

you camera pros probably already know this......but I think I should have paid more attention befroe buying this camera last week....

I wanted more pixels as well as didnt want to have to buy a new macro lens and my previous camera was the d-100.......so i was pretty much limited to the d-80 and the d-200 for choices

I bought the d80 as I really just wanted the more pixels and it was much cheaper......or so i thought

i bought this from a company I have used many times before

I just saw this-

Am I missing soemthing here or did I just throw $300 to the wind??

Is there any reason why I shouldnt return the camera and buy the other one and pocket the cash??

TIA

There are a LOT of sleezy folks in the camera business. You did fine with B&H; they're about as reputable as they come. They are also generally pretty close to the best legitimate price.

The "other" guys usually are selling you a stripped grey-market camera (i.e. no manufacturer's warranty). Once they get you hooked on the price they start selling "add-ons" like batteries, software, cables......which should come with the camera. If you decline the extras, your order never ships. If you do buy the extra stuff, it turns out to be 3rd party garbage and the package ends up costing you more than retail at an honest store.

always always google the name of the place your getting it from. You'll get a review somewhere...

I almost fell into the trap, those same sites had a d40 with kit for 279,
ya i wish...

I still havent been able to use my camera :(

Being fairly computer illiterate and only knowing how to use one program that wont process these files..........not a good thing

Ive taken some jpgs.......but I didnt buy the camera to take jpgs.

This week comes new computer shopping and finding someone to give me a photshop lesson. Unless anyone has any suggestioons for a simple way to do just the most basic processing to these raw .nef files.

all I need to do is crop, exposure, contrast and sharpening....for the moment anyway. any suggestions??

I just checked it out......

not cheap........let me ask you this. Is this any easier to work with than photoshop?? Photoshop overwhelms me....or I should say everytime I have played with it it is way more than I want to deal with and learn. My silly old school Nikon view gave me everything I needed and was super simple to use.

as well, my computer can barely handle the photposhop 6 that is installed on it, although it handles the nikon view 4 gigs at atime at broadband speed.

Is there not another program out there that can do what nikon view did for me that can process my d-80 raw files?? Part of me thinks there has to be and it wont cost $300.

I VERY much appreciate the reply though, and at this point I am considering everything as I need to do something. :)

ok...they had a 30 day free trial that was supposedly the full version...but for 30 days and then you have to buck up...so I thought I would try it out.

Installed it, imported 15 .nef files. all of the exif data shows up and the program seems to run smooth enough, but it wont show a single pic?? I try tto open one is says cslculating and rendering...then it stops as though it thinks a pictures is actually showing up....but alas....no picture is there

Just grey boxes with all of the picture info there. lol
I can even rotate and edit these grey boxes......

??? any suggestions??

incidentally.......lightroom wont show nef files from my old camera either (d100)

ok.....sorry this is turning into a software technical support, but the only place I know to go for helpo is reef forums as thats all i frequent....lol

anyway........I googled and found this with others with similar "gray box"issues with lightroom:

quote:Just an update for those who are experiencing the same problem: Updating the drivers didn't work but changing the color space did.

what does that mean?? color space??

for anybody that cares.......Im in business... :)

And I just realized that my stubbornness in using that stupid nikon view program that I was familiar with had been cutting myself seriously short for the last year.

This lightroom thing is SWEET. My computer can barely handle it so I will need a new computer.........AND $300 mor for this lighthouse program...............but this program is a little better world than Im used to.......just a little

heres the first few shots I edited........ nothing spectacular or even as good as I could do with the d100, but its a start.....
