Did they mate???

Hello,

I've had and adult ocellaris for about 2 years it just to have a mate that passed away about 6 months ago, so I thought I would add another mate.
This afternoon I added a small ocellaris to my 130gal DT.

When the small (1-1.5inch) was added to the tank it took about 1min for them to notice each other and then almost immediately the large adult ocellaris started shriveling next to the small one.

I believe this means they're mating and that the large adult ocellaris is being submissive , but isnt the small one suppossed to shrivel and be the male? Why is the larger one doing this?
Will they pair and become mates?

Thanks for the help...

Mine was alwasy smaller male being submissive.

Thats what I think is supposed to happen. Thats why Im confused because the large adult one is being submissive? Could they both be males or whats going on?

anybody know whats going on???

So i guess nobodg has has this happen.

I just wanted to know so that I could exchange the small ocellaris at my LFS while they will still take it back.

??

Odd behavior for sure. Not sure what that means as typically the larger is the dominant. Now if one or both lit up a cigarette.. that would be far more indicative that something was going on ;P

I'd say try to give them time (if your LFS cooperates). Or just swap out for another. When getting another, try to get the smaller of the clowns they have. More likely for it to be male that way.

IME, this happens from time to time. It could be the larger one was just telling the smaller one i'm bigger and I should be the dominant one sort of thing :) I see that happening from one of my pairs. And as long as they're getting along you should be safe. Like gweston suggested, give them some time. Good luck! :)

Ok thanks for the help! They are getting along just fine, actually the new small clown just started hosting the LTA which now is shared by both clowns. So everything between them is fine. I just didn't want to end up with two males since I wanted the pair but anyway I guess I'll give them time as pointed out.
The clowns look pretty happy and the new one is eating great!

If it helps anyone the new small clown is tank bred and hosted my LTA within a couple of days!

Thanks for the help!

I posted a thread earlier about adding a new clown after I had one in my tank for over a year. When I added it the same thing happened, the older, larger one would swim around the new one and twitch oddly. It stopped after the first and now, after a week, the smaller one does it to the larger one from time to time.
