Difference Between Cree XR-E and XP-E?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what the difference was between CREE XR-E Royal Blue and CREE XP-E Royal Blue. And is there a difference between the 'Premium' LED's and the 'Regular' LEDs.

The XP-E is a newer series with different primary optic and marginally higher efficiency. The .pdf at Cree's website has all the details. As for 'premium' vs 'regular' I'd wager the biggest difference is in the pricing

The XPEs are about 30% more efficient, so brighter and uses less electricity.

They may be more efficient, however, the 30% is luminous efficiency. This has nothing to do with PAR. You can have over 2000% more luminous efficiency and have the same PAR. That isn't the case here as the spectral plots are similar, however, they are not necessarily more efficient with regards to PAR. I haven't seen any PAR test, have you?

For a 30" tall tank, you'll need all the punching power you can get. I would go with 40 degrees or less even. 70 degree won't necessarily punch down that far for SPS. It's pretty wide for a tank that tall. Maybe if you keep the glass really clean, but otherwise, better to go narrower

To be honest I'm a little out of my element with LED's. I'm a halide guy, but for this tank I wanna have very good growth so I'm gonna have 3 400W halides and I was thinking 3-4 LED fixtures.

I'm sort of asking what you guys think would be best for my lank since I'm not too familiar with LEDs. My tank is 6 feet long, 3 feet wide and 30" tall and I'm going to have mostly SPS. Would 30 degree optics like it was suggested above be best?

XP-E and XR-E have the same binning code. The best I have seen is D-13 which is available in both. So that means the same amount of light per watt. The catch the XP-E be defaults spreads it over a larger area. Bur if you use lenses then it doesn't matter.

Am i understanding that you want halides and LEDs? 3x400 watt halides should be plenty. Too much light can slow down growth. It depends what you are keeping and where though. I guess maybe it would help to have more information on why you want so much light. I'm not sure I'm understanding correctly...

I was going to have halides and VHO but those bulbs are becoming harder and harder to find and also, I wanted to try LED and halides so I could have SPS on all levels of my rock and have good growth.
