dimensions of 9005

How much space do i need (foot print wise) for a tunze 9005 including room for the output pipe?? I read the foot print is 4"x4" roughly, but, i wonder does that include the output pipe?? thanks.

Get the 9010, the 9005 does not include the pipe/sump system, by the time you buy a 9005 and the 9005.400 extension set, it is only $30 less than a 9010. The 9005 is really made for in tank use with a canopy, that is its niche. The 9010 needs a 5 by 7 area, same as the 9005 with sump kit. You might also take a look at the 9410, it is the same height as a 9010 but uses a needlewheel pump, it is stronger, it does have a bigger footprint. (10 by 7 roughly)

well, i actually reduced the size of the planned aquarium as i plan on using an all in one tank that has the skimmer up top ... so, i really need to use a skimmer with a small foot print and still kicks tail ... based on that, would you still recommend the 9010 ... the skimmer will not be in a sump?? thanks.

If you are not using it in sump, you don't need the outlet pipe at all. The skimmer measures roughly 5 by 5 with the hardware or optional magnet holder. How big will the tank be and what do you plan to keep?

the tank will have dimensions of 30x24x24 ... but, the back 6" of the tank will be devoted to filtration ... skimmer, return pump and refugium (chaeto) ... the front portion of the tank (30x17x24) will be mainly sps and clams - bare bottom ... what do you think?? bioload will be medium to heavy with several smaller fish ... i.e. chromis, cardinals, fire fish etc.

roger - thanks for the feedback ... i am a bit puzzled though ... when looking at the dimensions of the tunze 9015, it is still listed as 4.9 x 4.4 - the same as the 9005??

Bodies are the same but the cups are different and the cup doubles as a reaction chamber, the pumps are also different. I would not recommend the 9015, I like the 9010 and I think it would do the job if used with some phosphate remover and carbon and good maintenance practices.

what is the difference between the 9015 and 9010?? I would prefer an oversized skimmer if i can keep the same foot print??

The cup size, the 9010 can be upgraded to a 9015 by just changing the cup. I would start with the 9010, granted you can't run the air full open or you will just collect water, but the 9010 lets you skim wet or dry, the 9015 skims very dry.

thanks for the honest feedback ... can i save on the foot print needed by simply using an acrylic stand as opposed to the brackets or magnets??

also, is the difference between the 9005 and 9010 the cup as well?? the reason i ask is i have a friend with a 9005 that i was going to get a good deal on - thanks.

9010 has a bigger pump and bigger cup vs 9005. I am sure you could rig up a DIY hanger that would save some space, it would then be about 4.5 by 5.
