hey whats up i have a new setup 4 weeks old ish i had about 50 lbs of dry rock in there and recently added another 40 pounds or so to the tank. i had what looked like diatoms for awhile. i cut back light and they went away on their own. over the past 4 days my rocks and back of glass have the brownish layered like algae on it. lights were only on for acouple of hours each day. any ideas? nitrates are at about 20ish and ammonia is close to zero.

Just a brown algae.. totally normal..
Just keep working on the nitrates,etc..
You don't need to turn the lights on at all..

Have you started doing regular water changes? if not start now..

welcome to a new tank..
brown/green/red is in your future.. just keep levels where they should be and ride it out.. It will go away as the tank matures (provided you maintain properly)

There is no time frame for how long it will last. It will vary from tank to tank. It will depend on the husbandry practices. I will sometimes use a turkey baster to help keep the rocks clean. I would recommend keeping up with water changes and not overfeeding.

Brown diatom algae is how it looks to me. Only reason I know is my tank is full of it. Ben dealing with that for the better part of 4 months. Welcome to high nutrients.

Just like WaReefer says this is definitely high nutrients. My SO would never rinse off frozen cubes before feeding the mandarins, which was basically pouring in liquid fish food. I had no idea and the tank would get absolutely filthy every time.

Depending on what you're keeping it may be difficult to feed them the correct amount without too much nutrition being left in the water. Read up on your exact fish and find out if maybe you're feeding them too often.

I went from green hair to brown to bubbly brown to a red film to more green and it's only been about a month lol. My nitrates are pretty high even with weekly water changes. I suspect my problem was from dosing pure ammonia every day during cycling. Just keep telling yourself it'll get better as long as you keep up with your maintenance
