Yep, that would be diatoms. I supplement silica to promote such growth (for the snails that eat it and need silica), as well as sponges. :)
Wow, finally somebody else who encourages diatom growth - but I think it's just you and me!! -lol- :D

I'm going to turn the C02 off to my reactor for a week and use two part and Kalk for alk and calcium , to see how the Dino 's react to it.
I let you know .

1. seems there is great confusion and misinformation because many do not know the difference between diatoms and dinoflagellates.

2. Only major common point I can find for treatment is PH of 8.4 or more for extended time.

3. In most cases it seems this is highly responsive to light and very aggressive in growth.

4. Also under some water chemistry it seems this can very nearly poison the water.

I've tried to study this and research as much as possible on this, as there is very little definitive information. Randy , thank you so much for exploring this very serious and not well understood problem. I very much look forward to your findings.

Very best regards.

Is not confusing at all it is like day and night it is no way you can not tell you have dinoflagellates or diatoms.
Yes for some one that never saw any of the two is, but most of the reefers saw the diatoms when they first start there tanks up.

I had it a year ago, real nasty stuff!!

I had NO idea what Dinoflagellates was until you posted that picture. Last year my tank broke out with that... it started slowly then it just took over the tank really quickly. I went to my fish store and asked them what I should do... they didn't have a clue. I did water changes, I kept the lights off, turned the temp down... I even tried cleaning off the rock. I know... stupid idea. Nothing worked. I was so frustrated that I was going to shut down the tank... give away my fish... INSTEAD, I threw out all the rock and bought new rock. What an absolute headache!

Thanks for the input everyone.

Here's the data so far. If there are substantially more responses in the next few days, I'll incorporate them into the article as well:

FWIW, this thread is about dinoflagellates, not diatoms. :)

Sorry Randy,wrong thread:rollface:
