Dinoflagellates or cyano or diatom?

Can somebody help me to ID this thing, I thought it was diatom, but reduce phosphates, silicates and nitrates don't help at all. Only manual removal helps a little...

My tank:
Fluval 13.5G
Coral Pro Salt
1.025
Chaeto in refugium
Light 12h a day (stock light from Fluval)
Flow 240+425 GPH
Mechanical filtration, carbon. I used vodka dosing (1ml daily) before.

Any help? Any advice?

Hi there....looks like cyanobacteria to me..... especially in that third pic. Have you tried several days with a total Black out....no lights etc? If that doesn't work I really like Chemiclean.

Little more information. Actual current test results. Showing 0 or low nitrates means nada. It’s feeding off it. I’m seeing more Dino/Diatom, red stuff looks like cyno, never seen it grow on algae like that. I would go dark, and get ready for a run of small consistant w/c. Every other day, vac the gravel. Good luck...

Agree.
Cyano will roll up like a carpet if blown by a power head. Long stringy snot looking stuff.
That looks to be dinos.
Need to know your alk and ph.
Do you have a good skimmer?

Deff dinos..
Only way I was able to beat them was a lot of syponing and water changes..

They are survivor experts..i do believe that I read that dinos have the ability to change the water chemistry to better meet their needs

I have read that keeping both alk and PH high.
Skimmers always help imho, raised the Oxy levels driving PH up.
Do a lot of searches and pick the best route(not the easiest one).

Those are DEFINITELY Dino's. Get some Rowa Phos and a reactor to put it in. THAT will take care of the problem for you.

So, I start my battle:

Put the Fluval PS2 skimmer in the middle chamber

Chaeto grows good in the first chamber

Shiphon as much as I can

Use PhosGuard and carbon

Vodka dosing (1ml for 13.5G)


I also try a*blackout and 1ml of*Hydrogen Peroxide daily.

Those are DEFINITELY Dino's. Get some Rowa Phos and a reactor to put it in. THAT will take care of the problem for you.

PhosGuard will not work, it is cheap and does little.

Go with ROWA, expensive, but absolutely reduces phosphates to undetectable quickly.
Comes with media bag, 100g SKU is the smallest and would do your size well.

It actually works best when sandwiched between filter media.
It also can be used in a reactor, but the tumbling speed must be very gently.

I put my "bag" in a simple HOB filter, sponge, then ROWA, then carbon on top.
I use 50g of the 100g jar (stuff comes wet). I am not sure how long it will last, we are only in week two, but I would guess, a month at most! Testing weekly for phosphates to determine this.

I think this is a "get what you pay for" thing, the absorption rate of phosphate is much better, had a bit of algae, just melted away in first week of use.

Can see no ill effects to any inhabitants, in fact, I thought my corals seemed more inflated than usual.

I will buy this product again...Got this tip from a guy in England, 650 litres and wow, absolutely pristine.

I would put my money on Dino. I had it. I was able to beat it with a 3 day black to knock it back a bit then dose Dino X. It's good stuff.

It's important to watch how they move around. The dino in the upper right of my video is moving around a centerpoint.
