Dipping acans

I know you can dip sps in bayer solution but I just picked up two acan frags that arent in great shape and was wondering if this method is safe to use on them. 5 mo bayer to 1 cup of tank water. Thanks in advance.-greg

I've never used Bayer, but I dipped my Acans in CoralRx and it didn't hurt them at all. I know the CoralRx is sometimes recommended when corals aren't doing too well, so you might want to go that route. I've never used Bayer, so I can't comment on how well it works.

Ok thanks for the info, i usually use rx but i recently found out about bayer and its much cheaper. Anyone have experience with the bayer dip on acans?

Sorry, same experience as you guys, RX is my go to, is it somewhat expensive, yes, is it ridiculously less expensive than some of the acans we put in our tanks, yes. To me, you have to pick and choose where you are going to spend your money, and when it is cheaper than something in your tank, it is worth it.

I know a shop who dip all their incoming non-softie corals in bayer with no ill results, but it treats pests and not infections. If your acans aren't looking well then chances are it's not something that bayer can help with, I'd try iodine or some of the other suggestions on here.

I actually got them from a local reefer and when he recieved them along with a shipment of coral they were near dead. They made a small recovery in his tank but much of the flesh was gone from their skeletons. The flesh that is left, now in my tank, looks really good its fluffly and they are extending feeder tentacles I just wanted to dip them as a precaution more or less. Plus Ive been hearing a lot of really good things about the bayer solution so I figured if acans could be dipped in it, now would be the perfect time to try it out. Thanks for all the responses

The point of using Bayer is to remove pests. If the coral is already in your tank there is not much point in dipping it, as any pests that may have been on the coral have had ample opportunity to spread throughout the tank. If you want something to protect against bacteria/disease, I'd try an iodine based dip as others have suggested. And FWIW, I use Bayer at 20mL per cup for 15 minutes. I've heard of some pests surviving lesser protocols with Bayer so I wouldn't feel safe using only 5mL. I've only used it on SPS so far, but plan to dip all future stonies in this way.
