Dipping Polyps

Last month I got some polyps that developed zoa pox several days after I got them. I moved them to my qt tank and treated them as described in several of the furan 2 procedures Ive found online. They sat alone for ~3 weeks then I put them back in my little zoa frag tank. I now have several more frags that seem to have developed them.

My questions are, is this something that will stay in the tank water even with the infected specimen removed? Would the tank they were in need to sit fallow without any zoas like when treating for ich?

This has also gotten me thinking that I should be doing more when I get new frags. All Ive been doing so far is giving them a good visual inspection and an rodi dip then putting them in my frag tank for observation. What do you guys do to prep new zoas for your display tanks?

TLF's - Revive & Lugol's is what I use, depending on what I'm ordering. :)

Really wondering about this myself!

but if you have a pox outbreak in your tank and remove all zoas for treatment, is there a certain time you must wait before placing zoas back into your system once they are healed? Will the pox stay active in the tank even without zoas?

I will PM a friend, and have him reply to this thread. :)

Doing dipping procedures and rinsing under moderate cold FW (30 seconds to a minute), does a good job of keeping off the bugs.

Ok so dont judge me, but when you say rinse in moderate cold freshwater you are indeed rinsing with RODI right?

The plan is to remove and dip all polyps in the tank. Which is ~20 frags. I looked for my Furan - 2 and discovered I am out, so will be doing this tomorrow since the LFS is closed. :( Oh well no biggie.

Next question, I have 2 small SPS frags in the tank with the zoas. A pink birdsnest and a small acro. Is there anything in the zoa pox that would affect/transfer to the SPS? Or is this something that only affects zoos?

Judge? No. I wouldn't judge a person based on a question. :)

RODI or FW - doesn't matter (at least in my experience.). After a FW bath, I re-rinse with a little tank water.

Supposedly, my friend had PM'd you earlier, did you not get his message?

Wow! Really straight from the tap?! My taps TDS is 347, wouldnt that cause some problems?

You're just rinsing off the polpy(s)/frag plug. You're not soaking it, or anything else.

You can you RO/DI, yes.

Depending on where I got the zoa's from I do the following:

1. Acclimate - a giveme.

2. 10 minute bath in Lugols

3. Rinse with old/or new tank water

3a. Possibly bathe in ReVive

4. Rinse in FW for 30 seconds to a minute. If I have extra RODI, I use that. But I have used just tap for 30 seconds or so. No problems at all. I have no zoa pox, zoa nudi's, zoa spiders, etc.

Additionally, I buy from very reputable sources, that either are KNOWN for quality livestock, and/or QT for 2 weeks +.

Thanks! All the polyps I've gotten so far have been from a couple LFS I stop by now and again. I know exactly which frag was carrying the pox. Though I didnt see the pox for a couple days. So I'm assume they were carrying it but weren't showing any visible signs yet. Anyways, my display tank still looks great no problems at all so far. *knock on wood*

Yes I did get the PM from 650-IS350. Thank you both for all your help!

Your welcome. Let me add some additional comments to MY statement above. If they don't get QT'd at all, or have been cut and healed for more than 2 weeks, I assume the polyps are in good condition. I take them to the light, check for spiders, weak signs of polpys. If they need to be dipped, or they look like they need to be dipped, I do so.

Dipping causes stress. So if you start dipping either Luols and/or TLF's ReVive, they will be stressed out to a degree. Give them 2-3 days and they should be back to normal. Although dipping is SAFE, I am pretty sure it doesn't remove 100% of the problem. For some reason I've heard people double dip, often times doubling the strength, and STILL have problems.

However, like I said, I have only dealt with extremely viable stores, that take pride in quality and customer care. I wouldn't buy from "joe schmo" even if he had the rarest polyp for $1 a piece. Often, good stores, have a replacement policy. If you are unsure about some polyps, setup a 2.5g QT tank, and let them QT for 3+ weeks.
