I don't know what the grey stuff is? Possibly die off or lack of water flow? But since it's only a few days old in your system, you might shake the ball out a little bit in a bucket of saltwater. Even using the old saltwater from your next water change would do.
I had that same stuff and lost my huge ball of chaeto that I only bought a couple of weeks earlier. The healthy green chaeto dissolved into the gray stringy mat that could easily be separated from the healthy algae.
I don't have pods (that I know of) so when changing water I always rinse chaeto in that water. It's like rinsing a filter, always have a bunch of crap coming out of it.
My chaeto is much lighter near the lamp, overexposure to light or heat.
I am using a finnex hob refugium. after one week, my tank water is crystal clear again.
green algae on glass is diminishing. I'm seeing brown algae on the inside walls of
the refugium.
Is this normal? The chaeto has not kicked in yet or it is slowly doing it's thing
and the brown algae on the refugium walls will also clear up?
