Disappointed Cleveland Zoo

My Lord fellas how much Aptasia can your tanks hold?

I was in awe at the lack of higher end corals and even a lack of SPS and LPS.

Not surprised in the lack of "higher end" corals, but I do agree that the diversity of coral species at the Cleveland Zoo's aquarium is extremely limited.

As is their budget, space and facility.

Come to think of it, the only zoo that I have been to with a wide variety of corals was the Waikiki Aquarium. But they cheat because their tanks are out in the sun light :)

The best public aquarium I have been to would have to be the little tiny one in Key West. It was small but packed to the gills with awesome live coral.
Another public aquarium that had a killer big SPS only tank was the one in Denver. The local club donated all of the corals for it.

I totally understand the reasons as to why it is the way it is. They do the best they can with the space they have. Still a limited selection. :p

Not slamming on anyone, just playin around.

Tanks looked good last time I was there, so sorry to hear about the aptasia and hair algae. Their art collection is nowhere near as good as the art museum either. Have you been to the new Cleveland Aquarium? Not as good as many, but at least aquariums are what they focus on.

I was at the Cleveland Zoo earlier this summer. Sourly disappointed. Not only was it oppressively hot, the best attraction was two common turtles getting it on. Not the lesson I wanted to teach my 11 year old son.

Thank you for the sarcasm... LOLOL But last time I checked lions and tigers arent the only part of a zoo.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. I would have to believe if they are having a hard time maintaining the tanks then all they would have to do is ask for a few volunteers to come in and help.

Running a zoo is not a profitable business, this is why there aren't a ton of private zoos. Keeping that in mind, they do the best with what they have. I'm guessing that when they have a little extra money laying around it's not going to go into extra maintenance for the tiny saltwater section that they have since that is not what most people go to the zoo for.

Try to look at this in a positive way, at least they do have a saltwater section that kids can see and be excited about. They will be looking at the brightly colored fish and the corals they do have. 99% of the population isn't going to know what an aptasia is let alone focus on it or bemoan the lack of coral variety.

If you feel so strongly about the condition of their aquarium, try contacting the zoo and see if you can volunteer to help maintain it.

+1

The zoo has membership options which help contribute to the betterment of the zoo. They also have an adopt an animal program, where your donation goes towards helping that animal at the zoo. Have you looked to see if you can adopt one of the marine animals? Perhaps your moniker is a double entendre.

I enjoy their tanks, especially the jellyfish ones. Coral isn't that exciting to look at for most people. The reason you're seeing algae and aptaisia is probably because some of their stuff was donated by people and also because their overall water volume is much greater and since it is mostly about fish they probably aren't as worried about nitrates and phosphates as much. Lotsa fish poop.
