Disaster Strikes

Left for work at 8am and everything running as normal. Get home at 9pm and the whole system is dead. No power at all. Look in the tank and all my fish are dead. Purple tang, 7 year old Chevron, blue, yellows and so on. Tank temp is 73 and sps are out of the water have dried so they are now dead.

Come to find out my GFCI tripped. Why?? Everytime I hit the GFCI reset it pops. I eventually find that the PIECE OF $HIT!!! Won brothers 500wt heater is the problem. There is a short in it somewhere and its only 6-8 months old

I just changed 40 gallons and can't even run the skimmer as it overfoams right now. I am just so disgusted you can't even imagine. If I lose the SPS, I too may call it quits. I do think most of them will be OK as a couple small fish survived. I just dont know how long it was off. My backup UPS even failed or didnt last as long as I thought it would.

I guess I will see what it looks like in the morning

awww man, sorry to hear. hope it's not as bad as it seems. I think i might go buy a new heater soon...i have the same won bro's on my controller.

Oh man! The heater got ya too?

Same here left to school last week at 6am came back at 3pm and my WON Bros heater just never turned off. My tank temp was @92F when I got home. The controller was set @ 80F, but when I speced the heater you can still tell that it was on.

All my zoos were melted and some fish were gasping and laying on the sand because of the zoos. Thats all I had, around 6 colonies I bought off eBay.

I did a huge water change and added more fresh than saltwater in the mix. Ran carbon, and threw on my fresh water mechanical canisters. All my fish made it. I was so happy that I was on the right track for SPS, and that totally messed my groove up.

I wish you luck man!

Sam

WOW, that really sucks bro, but hopefully it will turn out good somehow, somewhere down the road. Good luck, let us now if there is anything we can do.

I am sooooo sorry to hear that. My wife and I are both shocked at this tragic news. We were both looking forward to see your in wall tank one day, so don't give up now. Hopefully everything will come back stronger than before.

I'm so sorry to hear that. :(

I too have a Won Bros 500 watter. Have heard the horror stories, but I already had it. It's been good to me, and it's been almost 2 years, so I think I'm okay. I did put it on my RK2 though, so it can never cook the tank. The GFCI trip scares me though, but I'm a firm believer in 'em when dealing with anything near water.
Best of luck to you, hope you can recover some stuff and stay strong!

Tony, that's such a bummer!

Anthony from Passion of the Sea told me when I first started to always plug the return directly into the outlet with no gfci or surge protector. I do run the risk of a shock but it helps avoid these types of terrible situations.

Good luck, get some carbon in there asap and start mixing water =(

I don't recommend running without the GFCI.. water and electric doesn't mix. I would rather you lose some fish then your life.

But anyway you want to do it, I hope you don't quit.. You have a lot of beautiful corals and beside where would I get my frags if you quit?

Wow this is tough. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help you. There are a lot og reefers around town that are more than willing to help in any way!

Tony, Hoperfully it is not as bad as you described after all. Calling it quits is not an option. Keep us posted so we can help if needed. pm me if you need anything. It has been a bad year for SPS lovers in So Cal! I lost alot of corals myself this year.

tony,

i cant believe that this is happening to you. if there is anything i can possibly do to help...just let me know buddy! drop me a line asap!
