Disaster

I have (had) a 3.5 inch Crocea. Went away for the father's day week, when I returned Sunday night my sump was half empty (overflow clogged), floor was flooded and my automatic topoff was adding ro/di water for I don't know how long. I usually keep it at 1.025 but it was down to 1.018. It took 2 days to get it back to normal. I found a Peppermint Shrimp dead in the sump and my clam was not looking too good. Well the clam died last night. So I guess my question is did the low salinity do it, is that too low for clams and other inverts. I know they are affected first but not sure if 1.018 would do it. All fish and corals seem fine, as do the coral banded shrimp, brittle star, cucumber and assorted snails.

I learned along time ago what you have just discovered with your auto top off. If you have an unlimited evap. H2O source it is almost gauranteed you will get a leak when you are gone and your auto refill will keep on doing its thing. I never have a evap source of more than 10 gallons. The exact same thing happened to me and it rained down on my landlords lower flat for 2 days. Thank God for renters insurance.

......Fathers' Day weekend:mad2: almost the same thing but I was sitting right here.Started filling up my storagetand and decided to go ahead and top off my 72s sump.I have a line running to all my tanks from the storage. So I opend the valve to the tank and forgot about it:rolleyes: I remembered when I put my feet down:( Salinty got to 1.016.Out of panic,I began with a quart of salt to get it to turn around.I have two 46s on each side of the 72.Had I not paniced I would have done it different.I had just done the same thing to a 72 in the living room the weekend before:( My wife is still wondering about that water mark and I sure as hell didn't need her adding 2+2.So I panicked and now I am loosing an open brain and a few SPS that I hope:rolleyes: will turn around:o What a frigging mess

reading this I think I will rethink my top off on my new tank. Maybe set the top off for ten gal at a time. sorry to here about you loss

Sorry to hear that. I agree that it was the salinity, especially if the change was fast.

IMO, float switches and float levers are playing russian roulette with your tank. The only non manual top off I trust is a peristalic pump.
